Hello and request assistance for grandfather - Otranto
Hello!
I've joined this group in order to see what I can find out in relation to my grandfather's time in the Merchant Navy. His name was Frederick Percival Alderman born 08/01/1916 (on documents noted as Frederick Percy alderman).
I think that he may have joined the navy in 1934 once he was discharged from an orphanage but I'm not sure.
He served on the Otranto (discharged from there in November 1939) - was a cooks asst & carver. I've attached the documents that I've been able to find but wondering if there is any other information/photos etc that may be available.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Lorraine

Lorraine I believe there is a remeberence wall somewhere in the port of Fremantle where a lot of immigrants had their names put on this wall. I have friends who did this they came here in the sixties and had it done. The next time I see them will ask about. Maybe your grandfather had his name put there also. Regards JWS

Welcome Walls
More than one third of Western Australia’s population was born overseas. The Welcome Walls projects pay tribute to those migrants who arrived by sea, landing at Fremantle or Albany, and to the many benefits they gave to their new home, enriching the lives of all Western Australians.
In Fremantle, over 400 panels commemorating the names of migrants who arrived through this area have been erected at the WA Maritime Museum at Victoria Quay.

I'd be curious about the welcome wall - will have to see what I can find. My grandparents arrived in WA but ended up settling in Melbourne Vic. Thanks Keith and J Sabourn!
