Just some Nostalgia of UCL and other lines!
Although this is an old site,i thought that those who may not as yet have seen it would enjoy the trip back in time!
The opening page is of the UCL ,but on the sidebar there are many other lines which all can enjoy as well!
I often look at this site, not only the Castle Line ,as the info on all other lines is always very interesting!
Enjoy!!
Cheers

PS When you scroll down the opening page of the UCL there is a Picture of the Durban Castle Crossing with the Dunnottar Castle in South Atlantic (Courtesy G.S. Anderson - SM JAN/85)
To my surprise when I first saw it,i was actually on the Dunnottar at the exact time! 19th July 1958,what a nice coincidence!
It was her last Voyage Homeward Bound and my very first trip! What a buzz! Signed on at Cape Town on the 15th July 1958 as First Class Asst Stwd, and 4 days on the Pic was taken!
Cheers

Re: Just some Nostalgia of UCL and other lines!
thanks for posting such an interesting subject, like you the picture of the RMS Arcadia taken in colombo in 1958 would have ment i was on board serving a gentleman called lord Nuefield (Bill Morris) renown for the morris car. he travelled out to Australia and back, every sat night he used to slip me a bottle of brown ale, I had him and his male secretary on one table and the president of the british paint works on another table with his secretary,
we were not allowed on P&O to write any orders down, never to carry plates or anything else from the galley without using a tray, never serve a hot meal on a cold plate, used heated dumb waiters to keep them warm, never serve a cold meal on a warm plate, never run on the ship or look hurried. when serving wine never hold the bottle between your legs but by your side to draw the cork, I don`t think i could do a days work like that anymore,
good pictures of the Canberra and Ruahine, ships i was also on.

Re: Just some Nostalgia of UCL and other lines!
They were great days Vernon at a time when all crew worked together for the benifit of all onboard. Though we may not have realised it at the time we learned so much not just about working lives and the skills we learned, but we found out more about life and it has stood us all in good stead throughout the years. Given the chance I believe many of us could stuill give the younger generation a run for their money in many areas. I often look at the way many restarants operate and can understand why they so often fail.
