This weekend marks the anniversary of a significant date for the safety of seafarers.

On 22 July 1875 Samuel Plimsoll lost his composure and his temper in the House of Commons, demanding better standards for ships, which were often dangerously overloaded at the time.

This unusual outburst eventually led to the adoption of the Plimsoll Line and a reduction in the number of deaths at sea. Read all about it, and how it is commemorated in our collection, on the blog: Commemorating an MP‚Äôs furious outburst on behalf of seafarers ‚Äď Blog, Liverpool Museums

“Everybody knows there is a great loss of life on our coasts annually... I am sure that if the English public equally knew how much of this loss is preventable, and the means of preventing it, no long time would elapse before means would be taken to secure this end.” – Samuel Plimsoll, 1873

Sunday 10 February is Plimsoll Day, in honour of the man whose simple idea is credited with saving thousands of lives at sea.
