Lew, Very interesting read but what i cant get my head around is why this Dutch outfit now dredge the Mersey surly there is a U.K. Outfit that could do the same job.
Dutch firm starts dredging Mersey Estuary as part of £300m Liverpool2 scheme
Peel Ports' deepwater river terminal will be able to handle the world's biggest cargo ships
The specialist HAM 316 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger vessel being operated in the Mersey Estuary by Dutch firm, Van Oord. It has won the contract to dredge the estuary as part of Peel Ports' £300m Liverpool2 deepwater terminal scheme

A Dutch marine engineering specialist has started dredging the River Mersey as part of the £300m Peel Ports deepwater container terminal project.

When Liverpool2 opens for business late next year it will see the world’s biggest container ships calling at the Port of Liverpool.

Family-owned Dutch firm, Van Oord, won the contract to dredge the Mersey Estuary and has started the work using its specialist HAM 316 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger vessel.

At the same time, port owner Peel has also announced a £5.5m investment in facilities and processes at the Port of Liverpool container terminal to provide hauliers with even faster and more streamlined service.

The investment includes an automated gate system (AutoGate) that will ensure faster turnaround times for vehicles and minimise administration for drivers and operators.

The dredging work involves deepening the navigable depth of the “maintained approach channel” creating dredged material, known as ‘arisings’.

These arisings will be put to beneficial use in the up-filling of the intertidal zone within the Seaforth triangle which forms the new Liverpool2 deep water container terminal. The balance of dredged materials will then be returned to nature and deposited at the offshore licensed disposal sites. Terry. p.s. Pic under copyright click link.

Westminster Dredging, Ham Dredging, ARC, etc were bought out by Van Oord some years ago and are operated by UK companies and personnel under the management of Van Oord. Lets face it the Dutch are experts at dredging and reclamation, over 30% of their country is built on reclaimed land from dredging. Pity our Govt doesn't pay for the protection of our coastline as well as the Dutch Govt does for theirs

Port Phillip bay here in Melbourne was dredged a few years ago by a Swedish company, did a good job.
Now we get some of the very large containers in and a couple of weeks ago two of the new fully automatic cranes were installed.

Job losses will follow but the strike last week has not endeared the union to the bosses.

Man Un beat City at the week end, now Liverpool, have they lost the plot Terry????
    Happy daze John in Oz.
