Hi, was on the kenya castle 1962/63, including the time we were at anchor at zanzibar, there was a uprising, overthrowing the sultan, he was brought out to the kenya on a launch, seeking asylum or protection, but was not allowed to board, dont remember what happened after that. Remember a few names, one being Tiny, a huge man, the crew pantryman, the ships cook was another hugh man (my boss) a scot, the crew 2nd cook was hungarian, and didnt get on so well with the ships cook...much to his misfortune. That being my first trip to sea was a great eye opener. My dad was also on my first trip, he was ch bedroom stwd, also known as monty, dad was a great crooner, and I recall him singing in the sods opera which was held in the crew messroom. A lot of the passengers were guests at these operas...anyone remember the sods operas? The pig n whistle was a good nights entertainment, except the beer (alsops) usually referred to as all slops was well watered down.I think the ch stwds name was higgins, and his brother was M.P. for southampton?
