I was on two shell tankers in the 60s the HUMILARIA and the HEMITROCHUS. A tot of rum was dished out every Sunday. Went down well with a few beers

When I worked for Joe Shell, the rum ration was two bottles every Sunday of every week this was given to the ships crews by Koeingen (Queen) Julianna it was said that she had a 52% stake with Royal Dutch Shell which owned some of the Tankers within Shell Tankers. It was a gift from her to all Shell Tanker Crews.

It was also given out after tank cleaning or if you did a main Boiler Clean with the Engineers or assisted them with a repair job in the Engine Room, generally was given to the crew who did the Engine Room Repair as Thank-you from the Chief Engineer!

We used to get of 2 tots of Rum per Man per Week, most of the time we used to sell the rum to boost the bar profits, Unless really you felt you wanted to have it as a gift from Her!! Every Tot was sold for around 7 pence to 10 pence of depending what was your tipple.i.e. Brandy,Rum,Whiskey or Gin.

Hope this is of some help to you. The rum was either 4 Bells or Woods Navy Rum( which was very strong) Per 1 Liter Bottle it was normally sold for £4

    Regards

    Default Nassarius

    Hi Pam,
I have documentation about my Uncle Reg Mellish, who died while cleaning the tanks on Nassarius in Sept 1948. I would love to know if there is any more to the story as the documentation shows that my grandmother was not satisfied with the account given of his death, I don't suppose there is any record of this among your fathers records
