"On May 20-1941 Convoy HX126 was escorted only by Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Aurania (F-28) which acted as Senior Officer of escort, when it sighted a submarine 09:37 bearing 080º. Immediately afterwards Darlington Court (station No. 41) and British Security were torpedoed at 09:38 and 09:39. At 09:50 the Aurania ordered the convoy to scatter. When the Commodore tried to round up the ships later, Ribera, Barnby, British Freedom, and Eemland could not be found. Three of them arrived safely in the UK, but Barnby was torpedoed and sunk on May 22. The survivors were adrift for 9 days before being rescued by a British cruiser, which was in company with another cruiser, seeking supply ships which had gone out in advance of the Bismarck to sustain its operations. After the Bismarck was sunk, the Navy went out looking for these vessels. The Barnby survivors were kept aboard the cruiser, which carried on with its task, and indeed found a German supply tanker which when sighted and surprised by the two cruisers was actually about to refuel U-93, which then hurriedly cast off and dived out of the way. The two cruisers sank the tanker, and then returned to Iceland where the Barnby survivors were landed after being on board 9 days".

    Dear Keith,
Thank you very much for the information. It seems the Berengaria was retired in 1938 and finally demolished in 1946. It was a great thought. All the best Robert

    Hi Des,
It was kind of you to take the trouble but the evidence found by Doc Vernon suggests it was most likely the Barrister 166266 seeing he has a copy of my dad's Identity Certificate for the Barrister dated 20.11.42 which sunk off Inishark, Ireland. 4th January 1943.
    All the best
    Robert

    Dear Doc,
Very many thanks for your replies. I am astonished by your research. From the Identity Certificate my dad was engaged on the Barrister 20.11.42. Keith at Tregenna has found the Barrister sunk off the coast of Ireland at Inishark on its return trip from North Africa about 6 weeks later on 4th January 1943. The evidence certainly points to the Barrister which I must admit is a long way off from Barrenger. I guess half the name is right.
Late in life my dad wrote to the authorities regarding his war service on convoy/convoys to Australia and New Zealand and he was sent the Pacific Star. I remember my father showing me the official letter and accompanying Pacific Star which my older brother who died over 20 years ago took among other things. I am grateful to you for all your efforts on my behalf. Not every detail ties up but it may be a case of "Chinese whispers" within our family circle. Perhaps my father thought his ship had been hit by a torpedo when his ship struck the reef. Perhaps there is more to the story. My cousin is compiling our family history over 13 generations and this is one piece of the jigsaw I do not want to forget. All the best. Robert

    Hi j.sabourn
Thank you for consulting your records but the evidence suggests it was the Barrister. A long way from Barrenger but I guess half the name was right. All the best. Robert

    Hello Robert
I am glad that amongst all the Replies there is at least some good that has emerged and it has helped you fill in some of the story facts!
Yes in many Households there are stories that get all mixed at times, and that is just part of life!
Anyway I hope that the end results being done on the Family will be a great one in the end!
Any other info we can assist with just please ask,and I know that the Lads and Lassies will do their best as usual!
    Thanks for the reply appreciated!
    Cheers

    Hi Keith,
Very many thanks for your reply. Doc Vernon found my dad's Identity Certificate with the name of the ship Barrister 166266 and his date of engagement 20th November 1942. You found the history of the Barrister SS in a convoy from North Africa to Glasgow when the ship hit a reef off Inishark, Ireland, on 4th January 1943 nearly 6 weeks later. All the evidence points to the Barrister. This is a long way off from Barrenger but half the name was right. There may be more to the story and it may also be a case of "Chinese whispers" within our family circle. We could only work with the little information we had from family memories but I must say I am astonished by the information you people have unearthed. Perhaps one day I will make the trip to Inishark to see the ships bell at Renvyle House Hotel. All the best. Robert

    Hi Doc,
Very many thanks for giving me the link for my dad's CRS10. Kirkham FJ to Kirman J | The National Archives. It was only a few weeks ago my cousin Stephen and I visited Kew on a rainy day without any success. I think another visit is definitely in order. The other ship I know my father was on was SS Raranga. The Wikipedia online account of Convoy SC 121, 1943, which includes the Raranga makes very interesting reading. If you are not already familiar with the story I think you will find it of interest. Last month my wife and I visited the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool which includes the only Merchant Navy Exhibition floor in the UK. It is a tribute to those who served particularly in the Battle of the Atlantic. Again, many thanks. All the best. Robert
