    Hi Helen

I worked on the Northern Star on her last voyage around the med. I had spent about 11 months sailing on the Ocean Monarch out of Sydney. I have managed to put my discharge book somewhere safe whilst decorating so therefore cannot find it and confirm dates. It was obviously sometime in 1975. I cannot remember a great deal of the voyage for obvious reasons.

    Regards Glen

    Hi glen
Was a bit of a blur for me too. All those boozy nights in the Pig & Whistle and then we had to look after thepassengers. What did you do on board. I was a cabin stewardess and did the dining room in th eeveing. I must have been fit!!!! Anyhow made lots of money and then spent it at the pub when we docked. Cant remember a lot of people from those days.

    nice talking to you

    Default Money?

    Hi Helen,
Don't know how you made any money on it. I was extra third officer on it in the early 70's and my salary just about covered my bar bill. They used to run a chit system in the Tavern bar and we had to settle up at the end of the month. We ended up working for grub and, of course, pussy.
Used to be on the 4-8 and got an average of 3 hours sleep a day. Always had a stewardess gf, a hairdresser gf (Stieners) and a couple of pax not to forget the occasional nurse- remember Wynn?

G'day john Higgins and welcome to the site. Did you sail on any other ships and if so which and when? If you have any details and care to list them on site you may well get to hear from some who knew you. So sit back and enjoy one of those many pints you pulled.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Default SS Northern Star

    Hello Hellen,
I spent a year on the Northern star working as a decky, I did about 12 UK cruises on her and a couple of round the world trips and several of the Pacific Sydney cruises back in 72. I had the best job in the world for the Aussies cruises, I was the pool attendent deck man and believe me life was good . 1200 pasengers
at least 800 of them female , Life was good. I ended up in Australia after getting struck by cupids arrow and have lived here ever since. I aften think about the great time I had and only wish I was that young again and knew what I know now. Didn't make a lot of money but boy did I have fun. So sad that the star only had such a short life whilst her sister ship the cross lasted 48 years!

    regards Derek Hain
