New Australia
Sailed from Southampton with the £10 POMS, then up to Japan and Korea to embark Aussie and NZ troops from the Korean war. Homeward bound via Hong Kong and Singapore for British troops, arriving back at Southampton Dec 31 , we were allowed ashore and had a good New Years eve, in Warrens and other popular watering holes, but the troops who had been away fighting had to stay on board, I could imagine the night would have been interesting to say the least.

Re: New Australia
Even though I didn't come out to Perth permanently until 1991, there was under 1 million living in the area then, no freeways or roundabouts, a nice city and foreshore and generally a peaceful place to live. Today there is over 2 million, most of the bushland and wild habitat of a lot of animals has gone and is still going, we are informed by builders and government alike that people want smaller blocks of land and from the once normal quarter of an acre is down to about 400 square meters, with absolutely no drop in price in fact has gone skywards. The WA government is busy pulling the foreshore to pieces and building what they say is more in keeping with a once beautiful city all in the name of so called progress and trying to leave their name and mark on history is more likely. When they build new hospitals they always forget to allow for adequate parking the same as train stations. They are sloppy is all that can be said of their planners they employ and are no where near the skills of the old architects of bygone times, as regards the money thrown away on these ventures they put the State in debt which the average citizen is going to have to pay off. The developers and the government officials more than likely making money from the sale of the land and such like are the ones who should be paying 95 per cent tax as they are the only benefactors making the huge profits from the costs of such. Like most in politics there is always a story attached to such high cost and out of this world achievements, the media would be better by making enquiries into such rather than some of the made up stories they put out.
