    Default Fleetwood Navigation School

Does anybody remember the Navigation School in Station Rd, Wyre Dock, Fleetwood, this was mainly for those sitting their fishing tickets, but was also used for pre sea training by those going to sea as apprentices, I was there in 1957 with two other lads whose names escape me. I ended up serving my time with Lamport & Holt Line.

Thanks for that Vernon, I have seen the site but not that page. The principal at the time I was there was Cpt McFarlane and Cpt Carruthers was teaching seamanship, a Cpt Trickett was teaching signals & ship construction.

    Default Fleetwood Nautical College

Fleetwood College is still going and thriving.
It is now known as Fleetwood Nautical Campus and is part of Blacpool & The Fylde College - but the nuatical training is kept on a seperate site.
The Campus houses Maritime Ops and Offshore Ops - the campus runs all the Deck courses inc luding fire fighting and medical etc - it also offers Offshore training for the Oil/Gas industry.
It is now located on the outskirts of Fleetwood and uses 5 satillite sites around Fleetwood for course delivery.
As I said its a busy place and is continuing to expand its range of courses.

Thanks for the update on the old Navigation School, my son who works in the offshore industry and lives in Italy, finds it easier to take his sea survival course in Fleetwood, as this is one of the better establishments for these courses. If you were there in 1976 you would probably remember Cpt Caruthers, who was seamanship tutor at the old college when I was there in 1957. Sadly Cpt Caruthers passed away about a month ago I believe.

    Smile Fleetwood Nautical College

I was there in the early 1970's where it ran pre courses for Navigation cadets / Radio operators. As I remember we use to catch the Knott End ferry where the college kept a number of dinghys etc.
Students were put up in the Dorchester Hotel on the front which the college took over.

    Default Fleetwood

Name rang a bell - Fleetwood will always be part of the SS. Tregenna history:

HMS Fleetwood arrived at Rosyth on 2 June to resume her former duties of escorting East Coast convoy's. On 17 Sept 1040 she picked up survivors from the S.S Tregenna which had been torpedoed and sunk.

H.M.S. Fleetwood which was one of the numerous small ships that were the "Unsung Heroes" of World War 2. These small ships which took part in the early campaigns such as the Norwegian campaign, the North African landings Operation Torch and the Battle of the Atlantic and Western Approaches did Britain proud. Because of their low fuel consumption they usually remained at sea with the convoys long after the more powerful Destroyers etc. had to return to port because of fuel shortage. The Fleetwood was one of those small ships.

Thanks to her and others similar, owed much and remembered also:

I went to Fleetwood Nautical College, for my tickets for Mates and Masters in 1975 1977 and 1980.
In 1975 we sometimes used the Station Road building as an overspill, The new College at Broadwater was being expanded and sometimes at the Radar School on the promenade facing the Euston Hotel, very handy for a pint at lunch time. That is still there, I went in there a few months ago when it was being painted.
Station Road is now derelect and boarded up, dont know what the plans are for it. I walked past it yesterday. I have a home about 300 metres from there at the Quayside.
the courses today include Survival courses for the Oil Rigs and Helicopter survival, Off shore Industry. including the usual Nautical courses.
I remember Capt. Carruthers, a very nice fellow and very helpful with the studies, sorry to hear he has passed away. I think he used to live in Glasson,
