    Hi, Maureen.

Initially thanks for both your interest and help.

Personally my own research has been more MN related,
hence this is a bit of a learning curve for me.

As Kathryn's request via family research has branched into
a relative in the armed forces, it does show how families
had children that grew up and chose to serve a Country in
    an own way.

Families would have fathers and sons that may have been in
    differing services.

Hopefully, between all assisting here we may eventually help
Kathryn towards her relatives information throughout combined services.

    Regards Keith.

I have found mention of one ship - India 1902-1908; showing family portraits and groups, on board a ship to India, RMS Victoria. The RMS Victoria also is noted for a departure for Normandy with a contingent of American troops.

    1904-05 Trooping Season

"The Indian Trooping season will begin in September… The following are approximately the dates on which the ships will start from Southampton and arrive there on their return.

    1. September 8-November 3
    2. September 30-November 12
    3. October 1-November 24
    4. October 11-December 8
    5. November 15-January 6, 1905
    6. November 23-January 18, 1905
    7. December 6-January 28, 1905
    8. December 17-February 8, 1905
    9. January 17, 1905-March 11
    10. January 28, 1905-March 28
    11. February 7, 1905- April 5
    12. February 18, 1905-April 13" [5]

I hope to go through all at this link for clues ASAP.

    Keith.

Thanks for your help Keith, I think though he might not be on any of those ships as he signed up Sept 1905 if the records we have are correct. But knowing about the ships and their names will help hopefully in tracing him. The Jullundur print out we now both have may not be Grandfather Smith as on Great War Forum site some one posted that it was a different John Smith. Damn nuisance he did not have a middle name! all his siblings did!!

    Cheers

    No worries, early days.

All will come out in the wash ?

I know when I began there was little
in reality of anything on the net etc.

Still finding more on mine after all this
    time.

Fingers crossed for a break through.

Hi everyone, have my break through with John Smith! Was barking slightly up the wrong tree! He was in the Rifle brigade not the RHA , both in India and in WW1. Found out through an Attestation from his brother George Walter Smith whom appeared on 1911 census. He tried in 1911 to also get into Rifle Brigade and he listed on one of his forms his parents and younger brothers and then realised he didn't have room to list the service number & regiment that John Smith was in. He instead put the info next to his younger brother James' name . When I looked up the index card for 2798 J Smith it came up with John Smith. Unfortunately he doesn't have any services records in the burnt records. However there is a listing in the 1911 census document for Fort William in Calcutta that has John Smith and also there is a casualty record in 10/3/1915 for J Smith with his service number. This was around the time of the devastating battle of Neuve Chapelle where the Rifle brigade lost so many in just a few days. I had a lot of help from Andy on Great War forum and a couple of others on there also. I have the war Diary for 2nd Bttn Rifle brigade which I am reading through, plus I have been given lots of photos and printouts of info from time in India and WW1. John Smith enlisted 1908 and went to India , I'm not sure yet what the ship they sailed on to go there but know they came back on the SS Somali in 1914 docking at Liverpool and then travelling to depot in Hursley Camp where they stayed for a while before embarking on SS Victorian 5 Nov 1914 in Southampton arriving 7 Nov 1914 in Havre. I was sent a photo of 2nd rifle brigade on inspection parade before being entrained to Southampton. Are there any photos of these ships and would anyone know what ship possibly would have taken them to India. John Smith signed up 4/5/1908 and would you do 12 weeks initial training to see if you are suitable ? If so then probably about Sept 1908 went to India.

    Cheers

    Kathryn

Thanks for the sites given Keith, great photos and details of both ships! I am still awaiting info relating to 1908 when John Smith shipped to India with 2nd Bgd RB. Will be in touch when I have name of ship. Still searching my welsh connections proving to be challenging but will get there like I did with John Smith military record.

    Cheers
