Default Kiwi needs some help please!

    Hello Everyone

Thank you for your warm welcome. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to the Merchant Navy and would like help from anyone whom can provide it. I am trying to do a family tree for my 86 year old mother's family. Quite a few were in the merchant navy. I have come across an uncle of hers that she has never met as he was a black sheep of the family and must have done something that no adult talked about to the children. Only know he was born Charles John Maloney 14/03/1907 in Stepney, London to James Maloney and Emily Maloney nee James. All Mum had been told was he went up North and we don't talk about him is what she was told by my grandmother,Charles' older sister. I have come across in my searches a merchant marine form/tag not sure what you call it. It is date stamped 21 April 1931 MMO Sunderland. Rating= Sailor and the form is a C R 2. Offical ship No: 132058 . At the top of the form are the words Dis. A. No. R44938. From this information are you able to tell me anything or direct me to file etc. I know from 1939 Register he was back in Stepney and got married in 1940. If he served during the war years I don't really know but they didn't have their first child until 1947. Any info would be super as no one whom would know is still alive and the only 3 from my mother's family of 11 ( No TV in those days Ha Ha) that are alive did not know he existed.

    Kind regards

The Ship you post relates to a Ship of that Number
Namely Rudmore 1911 changed name to Yewhill 1945 the again changed name to
Holdernore 1946 had its end in 1957 (Broken Up)Disposal Data:

    BU Boom 13.4.57 [Nijkerk]

The R Number is just his official Discharge Number will look and see what I can come up with.
The CR2 is one of his Documents held

1941 - 1972: Fifth Register of Merchant Seamen
In 1941 the Essential Work (Merchant Navy) Order created a Merchant Navy Reserve Pool. To ensure that seamen would always be available for service, the Government paid them to remain in the Reserve Pool when they were ashore. Thus continuous paid employment instead of casual employment was available to all seamen, and comprehensive and effective registration became possible.
All those who had served at sea during the previous five years, and those who were intending to serve during WWII, were required to register. A new Central Register of Seamen (known as the Fifth Register of Seamen), was established. CR 1 and CR 2 cards of seamen who were still serving in 1941 were removed from the old Fourth Register (see previous section), placed in 'pouches' BT 372 (see section on Seamen’s Pouches) or re-sorted into BT 364 and their details carried forward to the new register in BT 382 located at The National Archives. The Fifth Register of Seamen was maintained until 1972, although occasionally records after this date can be found.
The series BT 382 holds CRS10 Docket books which form the Register. These dockets create a sea service record for each registered seaman. They are arranged alphabetically within eight parts:

I guess he would have been involved with WW2 in some way.

Also could Kathryn confirm that the name is a full name and date / place of birth is correct ?

Thanks for that Keith, I have got all that info from my " Find my past " UK website and the free BMD index. I found the document mentioned in my original post when searching why he wasn't talked about by the older generation my grandmother's lot. Checked prison records but couldn't find anything? may not have done it correctly but found when looking for service records the CR2 mentioned. My geography of the UK is a bit up and down so not sure were Sunderland is, mind you to all the lot in East end London Stepney anything north of London was "Up North". Charles John was back in London as have the 1939 register print out and he was living with Annie Smith but not yet married. As they say the "The plot thickens" would like to get to the bottom of what it was all about? And would like to see if he was also in Merchant Navy during the war. Apparently others in the family tree were but not sure whom yet. Anything I can get about the document I found would be great as not sure where to search on this site and what info to put where?? Many thanks Kathryn from NZ
