John Manly
Searching for John Manly or Manley who came from Hemel Hempstead, Herts. and jumped ship off the Port Montreal in Australia in late 1969 or early 1970. He was on deck and was EDH or AB at that time.
He was staying with a young lady who called herself “Hendrix”and hailed from Katoomba in the Blue mountains.
We were very good friends and had great times together along with the rest of the crew that made the Port Montreal one of the friendliest and craziest bunch of seamen i’ve ever experienced.
He would be roughly 68-69 years of age
Really hope someone can help with some info.

Re: John Manly
Hi Trevor, I see that you have connections with Dover. I know a John Manley here in Dover but I don't think he went to sea.

Re: John Manly
Thanks but it's not him if he never signed on a ship. Do you know any of the old sailors who used to spend all their pay-off cash in the Cause is Altered, before they demolished it quite needlessly. It was my pub and i was gutted when i discovered it gone. Have visited my old home town but absolutely stunned to see it today, compared to my memories of it. I was born in Clarendon area and now it's the pits apparently.
Thanks for your reply anyway. Regards - Trevor

Trevor, I wish you every success in finding your friend, I have been searching for a friend of a good friend of mine who lives in Perth and has done for over 20 years, The guy he sailed and lived with for a short time lived here in L,pool a stones throw from me, I traced his sister here in L,pool and emailed her no reply, As both me and my good friend in oz agree some guys leave this earth before we do as sad as it is you have to take it into consideration Regards Trev, Terry.

Re: John Manly
I am still searching for my old friend, and have even tried Salvation Army who can't help as we are not related and they will only look for family.
Paid for an internet search, but again not really sure about the result as some facts didn't make sense.
Was going through old threads on this site 2 days ago and found following.--
Ivan.
I think I was bosun on the Araluen either late 69 or early 70, do not have my discharge book so dates uncertain. Joined KG V trip to southern Africa and paid off Leith (Edinburgh). John Manley took the bosun's job after me. He had been on her for a long time, joined in Melbourne where he had previously jumped.
Regards,
Bob Hollis
Just had a thought, maybe it was late 71 I was on her, sorry about that, the oul head is getting worse

These facts and dates tally with the John Manly i'm looking for so can anyone add any more to this search.
The member, Bob Hollis has not been active for some time.
Any further help will be deeply appreciated. Trevor R811047

Hi Trevor, my father (also Ivan) from his Discharge book was Bosun on 'Araluen' from 28th Aug 1969 until 5th November 1971, he passed away in 1976 aged 65 the same year is twin grand daughters were born
Must have been a good ship for overtime, as have his last payslip from that ship, last trip was 5months 5 days and he 645 hours of overtime!
Bosun's wages at commencement of trip 5/71 were £91.95 per month (odd figure!) increased 7/71 to £104.70 per month
Overtime was increased from 47.5 pence per hour to 54.5 pence per hour
