    Default A Thank You - Joseph Banor/Banov

    Dear all

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped on my previous post regarding my Grandad Joseph Banor.

Turns out he was Royal Navy, not MN.

I wrote to the Ministry of Defence and they were able to trace him for me and send me his service details.

He was a STWD X from 1939 - 1941 and was then Invalided with Anxiety, I guess due to what he had seen during the 2 years of war, he served at Drake 2, which I think (more research ongoing as only received details yesterday) was the Naval Base in Devonport, he was also on board HMS Adventure, BD Vessell (which i need to figure out) and Barbican., which is on his medal card, i will get the original documents when i get to the UK in MArch, so for now am relying on my Mum to read me the info over the phone ha ha.

He was awarded 2 medals during his time, and I am very thankful to have been able to find him at last.

I just wanted to say thank you very much to everyone who helped.

    Much appreciated.

    Louisa :-)

    Good news Louisa
At least now you will know a lot more of him.
Is there anything else we may be able to assist with now we know he was RN ??

Thank you Doc, I am just going to have to wait until I get my hands on the actual documents, been a bit difficult my mum trying to decipher them over the phone.

On his ship entries, it mentions either BQ Vessell or BD Vessell for a few months during his service, but no research so far was able to find anything related to it, I was thinking if it was BD would it mean Boom Defense? But not mentioning the actual ship? And i am going to try and find out about Drake 2 as he was there a fair bit.

I will get the documents at the end of March when I go home for a visit, I am very excited to get my hands on them.

    :-)

    Hi Louisa,

    BD = Boom Defence.

HMS ADVENTURE was a minelayer and BARBICAN was a boom defence vessel. HMS DRAKE II was an accounting base a satellite of HMS DRAKE - Devonport RN Barracks.

    Ah, thanks Hugh.

So on his entry, it just says BD Vessell and he was on it for about 3 months from the dates I could see, I guess I have no way to know what Boom Defence Ship this was.

Thank you for the info on Drake 2, he was a Steward so I guess this is what he did at the accounting base.

    thank you .

Sorry, one last big favour question, anyone good at deciphering handwriting:

    I have

    Drake 2 (25-1-39)
    Adventure (29-7-39)
    Drake 2 (7-9-39)

??? (Barbican) - I thought maybe Josephine? Or something fire? (12-10-39)
    ??? ("") - same Barbican (26-1-40)
    ???("") (B A Vessels??) (1-10-40)

    Drake 2 (1-3-41 until 16-4-41)

    Hi Louisa,
It is HMS PROSERPINE - naval base at Scapa Flow. The name in brackets is the actual seagoing ship he was on.
BA actually reads BD for Boom Defence.
