Thanks so much for this. I have found some of his records (mates exams etc) but nothing after 1905 but now you have told me what may be available I will continue my search. Wonderfully the mystery of the watch has been solved!

This is wonderful - thank you so much. Is there a way I can get is as an attachment or the reference so I can print and store it safely with the watch for future generations?

Wow - you found a couple I did not have - thanks so much. I do not think he was in Boer War but am finding out all kinds of new things recently. Everyone who has replied has given another piece to the puzzle and help me understand his life so much more, thanks.

#12... John in Oz. You should have bought your watch off George Robey in Port Said they contained a cockroach inside who was guaranteed for two days. Beleive Las Palmas used the Death Watch Beetle which had a much shorter life span... Cheers JWS

Whilst on a voyage London for Mauritius and Natal. On Thursday evening 17/2/1916 COMRIE CASTLE ran aground on Leven Reef whilst attempting to enter Mombasa. Anchors were set no leaks reported. Passengers were taken off on Friday morning. After unloading 700 tons of cargo into lighters the vessel was re floated on Monday 21/2/1916 and made passage to Killindini Harbour. She apparently suffered no damage. The company's vessel GALEKA stood by.
