Can anyone help me interpret a CR10 identity card from 1918?
Hello everyone,
I'm trying to find out about my great grandfather. Until recently all we knew about him was his name and that he was a merchant seaman. Using this information I've been able to find his CR10 identity certificate from (I think) 1918, but I don't know what the numbers mean.
I found an old post from 2012 from someone who had the same problem as me, and there were some really helpful people with all the answers! I was hoping to be as lucky...
I can figure out most of the front of the card, as it's pretty self-explanatory. The exception is "Rating: Asst. Stud" (but maybe it says "Asst. Stwd", i.e. assistant steward?). Also it has been stamped as "Cancelled"... does this mean he never actually got on a ship, or could it have been cancelled at a later point?
On the back there is a picture of him and some numbers in no obvious order:
98870.21.12.18 - I think this means he was going to join the ship number 98870 on 21st December 1918. Is that right?
Above that, but seemingly written with a different pen (I imagine at a later date), it says:
R.G. 14664/21 also R.S.13
And then squeezed in between these two lines it says:
CBP 11.3.21
Can anyone help me to interpret the info on the card so I can figure out where to look next in my search? Also is there anything I can find out using the number of his identity certificate?
Thanks in advance

Hi Hugh,
Thanks! His name was Italo Medinelli (although on the certificate it looks like it says Italc, so on FindMyPast it was listed as Italc). His DOB is listed as 20.12.1901 in Greenock (I think he actually gave incorrect info as elsewhere I have seen his DOB listed as 20.12.1902 and born in Italy).
Thanks for your help
Ali

Ali, RE: is there anything I can find out using the number of his identity certificate?
This could be helpful as it should help identify him etc.

That's what I was thinking, but I don't know where to start looking! The National Archives website is quite overwhelming for a novice!
