    Thumbs up mort

Hello Tony and welcome,I sailed on six Port boats over the years all very comfortable accomadationwise and always a happy crowd because the grub was good.I did not realise they still had a fleet much after 1970 as the containers stacked up in the port of Melbourne were mountainous.
I hope you meet up with some of your old pals on this excellent sight. All the best Mort.

Hello tony , your first year at sea was my last , something we both have in common though , we where both on Port Line boats at the same time. I was on the Port Melbourne. I was 24 and on deck , it was a great trip and I will always remember it . The good old days

Hi,On the 14th of March 1963, I sailed from the King George the fifth docks in London, on the Launceston, we went to Australia via the Suez canal, stopping at Aden. then round the coast of Australia, coming back we docked at Liverpool. I was a greaser, a very junior one at that, it was a great first trip. The storekeeper was from Newcastle, quite tubby with white hair, he treated me and Angus like school boys, tried to stop us getting ashore, unless we were with an adult, so we used to sneak off, always got a dressing down when we got back!

Did a five month round the world trip on her in 1965, out to Aus via Panama, home via Suez. Mad McCaskil was Bosun. Did hear he went over the wall one night looking for his brother. Dont know if there was any truth in that, anybody know ??????????

Mc Caskil for all his faults was a bloody good bosun that one could really have a laugh with. Recall filling up the drum to barbarise the deck and when he poured it in we remarked that it seemed rather strong. No for McCaskil he remarked that you could wash your face in it and did just that. Well after a few days when his skin started to get back to normal he still would not admit that it was to strong. But as I say a bloody good seaman and would not take any rubbish of anyone. I to heard that story that he went over the side looking for his brother.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.
