Driving somehwhere
A Chinese man has just been jailed here for two years.
His crime, a couple of years ago he killed a person with his driving.
He could not understand English and was driving a hire car.
It occurred at a notorious intersection where many such accidents have happened in the past, an intersection the authorities now say will have a roundabout installed.
Many tourists come here form many countries, a great number hire cars and have no problem with our road conditions and some times very odd laws.
The intersection in question had rumble strips to make the driver aware but this driver had no idea what they were.
To date there is very little as to the license rules for overseas travelers, if they have an international license then that is fine.
If they come from UK or other countries that drive on the left they may not need an international license.
I have driven in a number of countries, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and only had to produce my Australian license.
What are the current rules in UK regarding this?
I still have a UK license somewhere but have never been asked for it and found my Oz one was all I needed too hire a car in UK.
There has been a push here for attest for drivers before they can hire a car but little response from the authorities on this one.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Driving somehwhere
Last July in UK, as was over 80 they would not hire the car to me, but to wife who is not yet an octenagarian. Apart from ruffled feathers I sat back. And just went to sleep. Unless in the country is no pleasure driving in the UK in any case. 4 and 5 lines of traffic on some of the roundabouts is like the magic roundabout once on is extremely hard to get off without everyone blowing their horns at you, they don’t appreciate you giving them the victory sign either. UK all they require at most is an international licence and say you are under 80. No doubt some hire firms wil, hire out over 80 , but didn’t hang around to find out. Australian licence is ok also to most company’s. JS.......

you can get nicked (technically) now for giving the two finger salute, that is if you can find a copper and there is absolute proof.

In the UK you must renew your license when you reach 70.
For hire purposes there is some new requirement where you have to give access to your license details to hire companies in order they comply with new data protection laws.
Regarding foreign drivers, in my area there are two large Japanese manufacturers (Nissan and Komatsu). Japanese staff who are seconded here for 2 years are usually given a familiarisation course due to them not being used to roundabouts.

Re: Driving somehwhere
Very good, when I came here 28 years ago there were no roundabouts to my knowledge in WA. Shortly after they started to appear , and it was amazing to see people go round them the wrong way , maybe with living in the Southern Hemisphere and following the weather systems and thought they represented an area of high pressure. Even today some still insist on going against the flow of the tide. Cheers JS..

Re: Driving somehwhere
Anyone have an idea as to what countries drive on the left side of the road as we do here in the UK ?
There must be a few as the United States has not taken over the world (yet)

Re: Driving somehwhere
Japan must drive on the same side of the road as Us looking at the number of Japanese imports . And in Greece they take a neutral path and drive down the middle of the road

Re: Driving somehwhere
It must be a little difficult if a tourist is told to take a right at the roundabout
when asking locals for directions. as all exits are left.
LOL. K.
