In 1962 as a raw 3rd Mate I joined SS Hendrick for a short trip around the Med., through the Suez Canal and up the Gulf of Aqaba with a cargo of film equipment and Props. for the film 'Lawrence of Arabia' starring Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif. Pictured is the 1914 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost that was to be used to depict Lord Allenby's staff car. We also had on board 2 Rolls Royce turreted Armoured Cars. and a quantity of blank ammunition to be used in the Filming. In those days the Gulf of Aqaba only had one navigation aid which was one very bright light, right at the top. I recall that the chart we used had notations like 'Wadi conspic. (even at night)'! You can see in the photo of the car the registration No. PB 7078. I wonder if the owner of this car knows of its illustrious past?

The old movies still seem better than most new ones.

I loved him in the Movie " Rouge Male " that was some Acting! Anyone recall that Movie?

I thought he was great in the film Murphy's war. He played a Merchant Seaman who had been sunk and was determined on retribution on the captain crew and submarine who had sunk him. Boy's own stuff but a good movie.

Prior to your delivery, the filming must have started during 1961 when we arrived in Aqaba in the British Peer to deliver product. Our agent told us that King Hussein was in town for some water skiing and would be announcing his engagement to an English girl, Toni Gardner. Capt decided to dress the ship overall which didn't go unnoticed by the King. Captain's Steward knocked on my door and asked if I had any glasses, which were duly requisitioned. A VIP party came aboard for drinks with the Captain and we understand the King was one of them. That evening there was a barbecue where some of the Lawrence of Arabia cast helped to celebrate the engagement.
