Watch out there's a rozzer after you
In addition to the mandatory fitting of exhaust gas scrubbers and the use of low sulphur fuel in order to reduce carbon emissions from shipping, the French are now proposing to impose speed limits on ships leading to longer voyage times for certain vessel types. Could be difficult to implement though.

Re: Watch out there's a rozzer after you
Of course reducing speed can be achieved but at what cost to the consumer??
Many of the ships of today run on electric motors fueled by diesel generators.
But there is now a push by some of the cruise lines to run on gas rather than diesel.
A couple of them do so now and it is anticipated more will follow.
But the French being what they are it is no surprise the president has come out with such a statement.
Of interest the Climate Study Group have recently put out some information regarding Co2 levels and the effect on the planet.
As an example the Medieval period warm period one thousand years ago was warmer than today allowing Greenland to be framed, yet the Co2 level was lower than today by some 30%.
During the period between 1940 and h1976 the planet cooled while Co2 levels were increasing.
The historical evidence shows tat Co2 and Methane levels have had very little effect on the global temperatures.

I think it still possible that Diesel burn / efficiency / pollution content may be improved. I read a article from Bosch on how they had managed to reduce emissions further a short time ago. It will be possible I think with pressurised investment. Diesel engine efficiency has improved dramatically over the last 20 years and in all probability can go further.

It has greatly improved here in Oz over the last 12 years or so since Sulphur was removed from it.
There is a big push now by the Chinese with their 'Great Wall' vehicles to sell more Utes here.
The tradies love them and at $19,990 drive away all diesel who can blame them.
Happy daze John in Oz.
