IMO adopts 2020 carriage ban

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted an amendment to its forthcoming 0.5% limit on sulphur in ships fuel oil, designed to prohibit the carriage of non-compliant fuel oil.

The move is hoped to boost the outlook for LNG-fuelled ships when it enters into force on 1 March 2020 under IMO's 'tacit acceptance' procedure. The amendment will limit the carriage of fuel oil for propulsion or operation on board a ship unless the ship has an exhaust gas cleaning system.

One of the problems with exhaust gas scrubbers is that an approved open cycle scrubber discharges the scrubbing water, containing carbon and other noxious products directly to sea. The closed cycle system requires storage tanks for the wash water to be fitted.

Sulphur in Diesel fuel was banned here in Oz about 12 years ago.
Many of the cruise ships and cargo one refuel here so one would assume the fuel is all Sulphur free.

Vehicle sales increased substantially after the ban.

Assuming that they run the main engines on diesel and not heavy fuel oil.

Most of the latest use Diesel but more on the lines of what we know here as 'trucking diesel, with a move now to LNG as it is cleaner according to the ;Greens'.

Not according to a new report released by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) in June. The report estimated the amount of gas that is leaked, vented or flared from natural gas and oil production on U.S. federal and tribal lands. It found that 65 billion cubic feet was released in 2013 – the equivalent of the greenhouse gases produced by 5.6 million cars. In New Mexico, a methane “hot spot,” was detected by NASA satellites and in one drilling-heavy part of Wyoming a town measured air pollution readings that rivaled Los Angeles

Flaring at LNG plants is only used as a last resort now(safety) I retired in 2013 so not up to the latest developments but the shore plants and modern build LNG carriers are mostly into Reliquefaction (not a new concept).

LNG is a much cleaner fuel than Heavy fuel oil, ask any steam ship LNG engineer, how often they have to blow tubes when burning the BOG from the cargo tanks.

I changed the factory from marine diesel , to gas oil , to natural gas no soot on the survey at all , I used inverters on every motor over 5kW and used borehole water , there is a good case for responsible engineering , without distorting the figures , which is a huge green fault
