I came Ashore in 1986,Bill , and at that time the job I had with the cooperative was a final salary pension scheme so I commuted by M N O P F and roll it into the Co-operative pension unfortunately a couple of years before I was due to retire the Co-op sold as off to private industry and a final salary pension fund went with it everything got changed to a money purchase so I've not been an active member of the mnopf for 30 years . I do remember a few years ago several ex colleagues were really not happy with some of the things that was happening with the scheme so I felt that I had done the right thing at that time but thank you for the information.

I am looking at the springbok house I had thought that the RMT had a lot more involvement in it so what they appear to do it seems to be that most of the trustees are ex Merchant Navy and that they are attempting to sell off a large portion for development which will then give them upgraded facilities . So I might be looking at them for a respite. Next year but I haven't had chance to get all the details

The RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers)Was formed in 1990 through a merger of the old National Union of Seafarers and the National Union of Railwaymen. Which happened in about 1990, as the old NUS became smaller and smaller due to the demise of the British Merchant Navy it became imperative to amalgamate or go bust. All the assets of the NUS were united under the New Union ,the Springbok home for Seafarers being one of many which has a board of trustees to look after the place and the residents who live there.

This comes as a surprise to me too Rob - as the Nautilus site here where I live has all ranks from AB's to Captains living next door to each other in one big family.

Springbok was given to the British Seafarers as a thank you from the South African Government for their sacrifices in WW2 ,
Then the Railway men started to muscle in. KEEP THEM OUT.!!! They didn't sacrifice too much in WW2

I honestly don't know the answer to that Jim but I have never heard of any other qualification required other than being a retired ex seafarer.

To access the Nautilus Welfare Fund all they wanted from me was a discharge book number as it happens I still have one of my old discharge books where I can remember the number anyway there was no limit on length of service or anything to the best of my knowledge
