Purchasing Red Duster for Museum
Hello there from Vancouver Island Canada. Our museum (Je Me Souviendrai - THE ALBERNI PROJECT - HMCS Alberni Memorial - I Will Remember - www.facebook.com/thealberniproject) has always been involved with Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Day on September 3. Due to a serious miscommunication between other parties over the past couple of years, it appears that there has been a failure to supply each of our local municipalities with a proper Red Duster instead of the two versions of the Canadian Red Ensign for their flying on September 3. We have offered to step in and purchase the required flags, but due to the size requirements of the City, Town, and Village (and one of the Legions) we are finding that the cost of nylon 36" x 72 with rope and toggle exceed $200 each, something we are not quite prepared to budget.
My question to the general membership of Friends is that we need to find a more affordable source of Flag sales for us to accomplish this project of making sure that all flag poles in our community are flying the Red Duster starting next year. Can anyone suggest where in either Canada or across the pond where we might find what we need cheaper than what is offered by some of the major flag supply companies in Canada.
We can find much cheaper nylon flags on sites like Amazon and eBay, but they are not the right dimensions nor are they red (one we purchased looks very orangish red).
Thank you all for your assistance in pointing us to a good source for us to purchase community Red Dusters for next year.

I purchased two RedDusters from a source that I googled for under £20s made my own flagpoles from broomshanks took me half an hour .To fly the flags do we really have to be so correct so long as the general public are brought to the notice of our MN day

Hi Keith,
As you may recall.
Some years back I started organizing our three Municipalities and three Royal Canadian Legions to be involved in MN day.
Up until that time it had not been recognized.
They all purchased their own Duster, with Courtenay City being the exception.
Lewis loaned them the one from the museum.
This year was the first time Lewis attended our MN service.
Other years he has not been involved in anything on that day other than loaning the flag.
After our service I always drive around and check on all who participate in flying the Duster.
Five out of six complied.
I had been in touch with one of our city councilors regarding them buying the Duster
Unfortunately so had Lewis.
Hence the confusion.
The ones who purchased their flag through eBay were completely satisfied with the product and price.
There is no need to turn this issue into something bigger than it really is.
I am sure the City will have their own Duster by next September 3.
Regards.
Den.

Re: Purchasing Red Duster for Museum
I remember my voyage up the Great Lakes in 1958, when our Red Ensign, was also the National Flag of Canada, that confused hell out of the Yanks, hearing our accents, we were all from the Eastcoast of Scotland, all 28 of us.

Hi Bill,
The flag of Canada back then was like the Duster, but had a crest on it as well.
