Re: Menu from the Clan Murdoch 1946
That's the first time I have seen a clan line menu since I last sailed on a clan line ship in 1972 . That 19:40 menu would have certainly been very very similar if not exactly the same as the menus I saw in the 1960s and early 1970s thanks for putting that one up Vic brought back some old memories

How many people in the UK would be sitting down to a dinner like that in 1946? Not very many apart from those that were filthy rich. The Merchant Navy never ceases to amaze me.

#1 Bet the only concession to science was the probably. Only 1 or at the most 2 typewriters of. Ancient vintage and discarded from the office as good enough for them on the ships, as well. JS.

Re: Menu from the Clan Murdoch 1946
I think the purser catering officer was the only one with a typewriter , on the ones I saw were all the same vintage as the ships . I don't think you could really moan about the food on clan line and obviously in the latter day that Union Castle cargo ships as the menus were pretty good where the whinging came in was the fact that each mans ration allowed one egg per day for breakfast and a one egg omelette isn't very big .. euro so get people who complained that if chicken was on the menu as roast chicken you would only ever see leg portion chicken quarters overall we were pretty well fed and there was always a good option . Breakfast was always juice cereal fruit fish and a very good full breakfast with toast jam etc . Bread was always fresh everyday .

Re: Menu from the Clan Murdoch 1946
After seeing the way chickens were killed on lascar ships was not too keen on chickens. They had to come onboard as walking entities and met their doom in the washroom facilities , not too hygienic at the best of times. Once again we all have different habits and customs. JS

Re: Menu from the Clan Murdoch 1946
chickens for us were frozen portions , for the Sailors cook and fireman's cook frozen whole chicken , or local live chicken

Re: Menu from the Clan Murdoch 1946
Vernon, never had to look after the kids so their menu is new to me.
But on all UCL we had the luxury of a printer and office to do the menus.
But some of the dishes had odd names that I never saw ashore, guess the head chef needed to be inventive at times.
Happy daze John in Oz.
