Re: U.K. Registered Fleet is growing
Good news John, but a far cry from the times when we had one of the biggest, if not the biggest, Merchant fleet in the world.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: U.K. Registered Fleet is growing
If you look at the list of merchant ships that the Royal Navy engaged during the Falklands war and in the first couple of years afterwards they wouldn't have got done what they did do without a whole variety of chartered assistance

Re: U.K. Registered Fleet is growing
Rob if you google Royal Navy. Naval parties you will get an idea of how many merchant ships have been hired for various naval enterprises . Naval party 1007. The one I was attached to is still listed and think that was disbanded in 1985. The RN without support vessels couldn’t survive. Cheers JWS. Gives a list of naval parties 1942 to 1991. JS

Re: U.K. Registered Fleet is growing
The Navy from it's early days has always been dependent on civilian assistant and probably quite rightly to because when they have engaged merchant ships to help and support them they have probably be much cheaper and more efficient than sending out a Royal Navy ship because of the infrastructure involved

Re: U.K. Registered Fleet is growing
Half the navy of Nelson’s time consisted of pressed men, mostly merchant seamen. Why any British government could allow the British MN decline so far and to such low numbers I fail to understand. It is and always was the fourth arm of defence. These grand gestures of building a capital ship every once in a while does little to plug the hole. They probably take 5 years to build from drawing board to coming off the slip. But only 5 minutes to sink when finally arriving on station. JWS.

I still find it beyond belief that you can have a ship flying the red Ensign with a totally non English crew from the master downwards

Re: U.K. Registered Fleet is growing
Rob, point of registration is the key to it all and is used to suit the shipping companies.
But as to why the UK MN is so low as John mentions, quite simple, others such as China have taken over.
They dominate with ships so large now that we could never have imagined, crew willing to work long hours without complaining, and containerisation to such a level that the need for crew is now minimal.

Re: U.K. Registered Fleet is growing
#8. Apprehensible is the word Rob. The Americans at my last bit of knowledge retained the age old condition of tHe Stars and Stripes on its merchant vessels. The government departments in charge of British Shipping have forgotten all About the status quo, probably because they aren’t really British themselves. Any hostilities involving merchant shipping bodes. Ill for any future conflict. JWS
