as it was DC the breakers could have welded themselves together , and big blue flashes when opening them , I don't remember what the diesel donkey engine driven engines were, H&W 4-strokes on the Pendennis ,

Sounds about what I recall Abercrombie the commadore chief engineer telling me as he came up from the engine room as black as soot telling me to go to the bar and get him a bottle of Vodka.

I would have said vodka drinking was quite rare in those days certainly most of the engineers that I sound with wear either Scotch drinkers or the occasional rum drinker

Vodka I observed was usually drank a bit more than usual. It was one of the alcohols which wasnt as obvious as others by their odour. In fact it could quite easily be hidden by stronger foodstuffs. Hence a lot of alcoholics drank it by choice as well as any handy meths left lying around. JS

Unfortunately I found in industry ashore that vodka was the Alcoholics choice and they always believe that by drinking vodka you couldn't spot the fact that they were intoxicated we actually carried breathalyzers in the personnel department and they refuse to take one could be a summary dismissal

Gin, is the in drink up here in Scotland, gin distilleries popping up every where most Northerly is at Dunnet Head in Caithness my home county. There are now many gin bars in Edinburgh. I personally can’t stand the stuff, got so drunk on Geneva gin in Rotterdam, I was ill for days, I can’t stand even the smell of gin.

Philistines you lot, do not like Gin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No good going out with me then, nothing as good as a Gin and Tonic, or maybe a pink one, or just on the rocks.
    So clean and refreshing.

Most of the engineers on the Windsor at that time drank mainly beer, very few bothered with spirits apart from one third from Rhodesia who drank Rum like it was water.
But on the day in question, Abercrombie a Scot and a very nice man, wanted Vodka for some reason. Only time I can ever remember getting any for him.
I had to go to the first class dinning room bar to get it as that was where all spirits for officers had to come from.
No one there so helped myself.
Doubt if he ever paid for it though.

mostly we were all beer drinkers , one first eng would drink copious amounts of Scotch , famous for falling asleep at his dining table and landing face first in his soup
