Think either CMA or Cosco have an even bigger one capable of carrying 22,000 containers.

Bigger, wider further reaching, how far can this go?

Man has always stretched the limit in all he has done since cocky was in the egg.
Without such attempts we may well still be living in caves.

Whilst I do not always agree with what man does one must marvel at the conquests made, the ideas and conception of such ventures.
Yes bigger may mean bigger disasters but until they occur we will stand in awe of all that occurs.

I understand the economics of it but when you consider that these huge ships have a crew of something silly like 12 or 15 men I just wonder what we were doing all those years ago I'm absolutely certain that all this automatic engine room watchkeeping and self service freezer to microwave is nothing to do with the Merchant Navy I went to see with 50 years ago

Rob the first washing. Machine I saw on a ship was in 1964. Itsusage was very much controlled. Fresh water was very restricted prior to much later dates. No water making machines in those days.crews were very Much needed in those days just towork the ship and the continuous maintainance carried out .manning certificates during my time were based on taking the ship from A to B nothing more. The shipowner used such asto carry the least number of crew even before the shipswere demanned officially. As to wages in the 60s the lowest claim for Tax purposes were crews wages , the highest being de.. preciation on hull and and machinery, Insurance, stores and equipment, lubricants such as lub. Oils, food, and last crews wages, which was minimal compared with the others. I was made privy to the ledgers of the average 10000 ton tramp for the period 1949 to 1962. For those who quote how good some ships were for overtime it usually depended who was paying for. If the charterer or the owner. Good paying overtime was usually the charterer. Cheers JWS
