    Default Insurance for deck cargoes

The recent loss of 70 containers off the coast of the USA from a Maersk vessel, got me thinking about how containers stowed on deck are covered by insurance. Goods carried at sea are covered by the Hague, Visby rules and if deck cargo was carried on the old style general cargo vessel,. The Bill of Lading for that cargo would be caused along the lines of " carried on deck at shippers risk with no liability to vessels owners".
Specialized vessels such as timber ships that always had a timber deck cargo and log carriers would have standard clause's covering insurance on the deck cargo written into the C/P and bills of lading. With the growth of mega container ships that carry almost as many containers on deck as below and with the ship owner having little or no control over the contents as most are filled at remote locations, how does the ship owner insure himself against any claim if deck containers are lost overboard and what clauses are entered into those containers bills of lading? Out of curiousity I put into Google "what insurance clauses cover containers carried on deck on container ships". Loads of stuff came up but basically if you agree to your container being carried on deck, then you better make Shure that your insurance covers it and that bills of lading are claused accordingly.

Some years back a lecturer at the Uni I worked in emigrated from UK to Oz.
His total home contents were in a container, it was lost over the side at sea.

He told us he had to pay two lots of insurance.
One for the contents to a UK company, then to the shipping company for the voyage.

He did receive payment but it was only very basic and he said did not cover all costs.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
