He did a pretty good job, did the MN well.

Attended a do a few years ago and Prescott
was the guest speaker, certainly raised awareness
    for the MN.

If the young men you speak of had been called up to serve the country in the Armed Forces I can see your point. This bunch of zombies weren't called up, they volunteered to serve their country in the Armed Forces.
What about the 1100 young National Servicemen who lost their lives fighting in Korea. Some lie in graves in Japan and South Korea, others without a grave are remembered on Memorials in South Korea, there were no Repatriations home for these brave young soldiers.
Yes, all of them almost forgotten by the British public.

Bill, Clarkson in my opinion has an ego to match his over inflated bank balance, I don't usually watch him, but on this one he excelled.

    I watched the prog,
I do not usually watch Clarkson, But he was excellent in his praise for the Merchant Seamen.
PQ17 was a big cock up , caused by Dudley Pound, he was suffering from a Brain Tumour at the time and died within 12 months. I was surprised that he was allowed to make such decisions.
So a lot of ships sunk and a lot of Seafarers died.

This topic has been covered a number of times.
This is my reply from 3 January 2014, and it is still the same. Re; Richard Pearson, the Producer. I have just been in contact with William Duff, who wrote his Thesis for University Degree on the Rescue Ships - so he had plenty of information at his fingertips. He, too, contacted the aforementioned Mr. Pearson with the same result. I will never give information to the Media again. They have their own agenda and DISASTER sells the film. 153 men lost their lives and that is truly tragic. 504 were rescued. Who wants to know about that? I think that this is now exhausted.

PQ17: An Arctic Convoy Disaster January 2014
In July 2012 Keith posted a message from Mr. Richard Pearson at the BBC asking for information about Arctic Convoys and in particular, PQ17. I replied and gave information about the Rescue Ships. I have found his reply, ( August 2012) "We are still at an early stage of research with the PQ17 story but have already identified the crucial role of the Rescue Ships......so these important vessels will certainly get the credit they deserve."

I emailed him yesterday with a copy of our emails. Here is part of his reply. "Whilst tempting to also include that rescue ships we felt it might confuse the simple linear story we were trying to tell and risked doing neither subject justice." Jeremy Clarkson, very deliberately, told the watching public that ships passed by men in the water, unable to stop and pick them up and how terrible that was. Yes, it was terrible. It was a terrible miscarriage of justice to ignore the rescues. Disasters make better stories and how better to emphasise the point that to omit the other side of the story?

So, give information to the Media and you end up with pick and mix.....

I finally gave in and watched this program, I still dislike J Clarkson, but I grudgingly admit he was sympathetic to all the seamen on this ill fated convoy.

Often to raise awareness persons in the limelight are involved, not always every ones cup of tea but,
on this occasion spoke well and aided the MN achievement.

The Year of the Convoy (2013)

A MERCHANT NAVY STAMP of approval:

Defeat was mighty close in the second greatest war,
Five thousand ships with cargos sent to the ocean floor,
Merchant men were slaughtered sustaining our lifeline,
The Country issued ration books so desperate was the time.

A crisis at the home front, foodstuff very short,
Rations and provisions scarcely making port,
Convoys steaming steadfast under Red Ensigns,
Faced demise from U-boats, the bombers and the mines.

There were many heroes on land and sea and air,
And thirty thousand Seamen gave their lives out there,
    Transporting reinforcements, resources and supplies,
And fuel to fly the spitfires fighting in the skies.

Perhaps we should commend them by illustrating stamps,
The freighters and the liners, the tankers and the tramps,
It would be a special tribute, rather overdue,
To mariners who manned them and a way to say thank you.

    J.S.Earl Nov. 2009

Captain Joe Earl penned the above in tribute and commemoration and in hope for a stamp of approval
