Dear Mr McColl,
Thank you for your recent email to Margaret Greenwood MP regarding compensation for British seamen interned in West Africa during the Second World War. Please accept my apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
We have raised your query with the Ministry of Defence and will contact you again, once we receive a response.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any further queries.
Many thanks and kind regards,
Ellie Smith

Brian I am sure if you post your Urdu reply we can get a translation sorted out somehow, Margaret Greenwood is the Labour MP for Wirral West.
So hopefully we can get some answers and if we leave party politics out of it we may get somewhere.#2 Ref: party politics
Lewis, that reply from your MP bugs me.
You asked where the monies were dispersed to by the Government of the day.
The reply she will ask the MOD, why the MOD?
Any monies paid direct to the Government would usually go to the Treasury for redistribution.
Is she actually admitting that she knows about the funds and their distribution, or is it a red herring to put you off the trail?

Re: Letter from my MP
I wonder what will happen if they find out where the money went to, instead of to the widows and orphans.
The People or person involved will be dead by now,
The widows will most probably be dead by now and the orphans will be pensioners.
But somewhere there will be some embarrassment.

Re: Letter from my MP
As a matter of interest would it be worth contacting the French Embassy I'm sure that they would like to be seen as the good guy and at the same time give the British Government a kick in the teeth.

to me
Dear Mr McColl,
Further to your email regarding compensation paid to the British Government by France for the ill-treatment of prisoners of war during World War 2, please find attached a letter from the Ministry of Defense.
As referred to in the letter, the House of Commons Library provided me with the attached information concerning the ex-gratia payment. Unfortunately, the Ministry of Defence has stated they do not hold any additional information to this so details regarding the distribution of this compensation remain unknown.
Louisa, the librarian at the House of Commons, suggested that it may be worth visiting the Royal Greenwich Museum website as they have a list of sources and contacts that may be useful in establishing how this compensation was distributed: Research guide C10: The Merchant Navy: World War Two | Royal Museums Greenwich | UNESCO World Heritage Site In London
I will see if the link leads to anymore information on this subject.
Lew
I am sorry that we were only able to provide limited information in response to your enquiry. If you do wish to respond to any comments made in the letter, please let me know.
Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention.

Re: Letter from my MP
Can anyone throw any light on the year the compensation was allegedly paid?
I have searched the British Newspaper archives an can find no mention of this incident.

Re: Letter from my MP
It would appear the protocol for writing to an MP in UK is far more stringent than here in Oz.
But we have three levels we can write to, Feral, State and senators of both.
Not sure who you should send it to, send to your local and ask for it to be forwarded, never had a problem getting a reply.
If we are not sure of where to send we get them up on 'Google' and that will show their local address to send to, or an e-mail direct one.
