Default London Club P & I's Record Fine

The London Club has been ordered to pay 1 billion dollars for the damage caused by the "Prestige" disaster.
Strangely enough I met a vetting Inspector who had inspected the vessel in its load port at the start of its disastrous voyage and he claimed it was a rust bucket with serious hull wastage. I asked him why he did not report its unsafe condition to the port state in order that they would inspect it and possibly prevent it from sailing. His answer was it was not his job to report it as unseaworthy, only to report on its suitability to carry the charters cargo and it was up to the Master to prevent sailing by reporting his vessel as unsafe to wither his flag state or the port state he was in.

You should have reported the vetting inspector John. We do not need people like that in the industry. Makes no difference if it is after the event.
