World Cavalier
I was browsing through some information about H&W built ships.
I am curious if anyone has any information on the Wolrd Wide shipping Co, Tanker the World Cavalier.
She was delivered in 1974 but scrapped in July 1982.
After a tragically short life went for scrap at Kaohsiung, 23rd July 1982.
This period will fit in with the tanker war during the Iran /Iraq war. I have looked to see if she was a casualty during that conflict but have found nothing.
I know the tanker, World Knight was hit up the gulf with many of the crew being killed. We passed her on the way out of the gulf as she was heading inbound and she was telling anyone who wanted to listen were she was heading for. I remember our oldman saying if that guy does not get off the VHF he will be the next one to get a visit from an Exocet, sadly he was right.
Little did I know about two years later the ship I was on Al Safinia, would suffer a similar fate we lost 3 in that attack.

Re: World Cavalier
Useful link here but sadly it does not tell you what actually happened to her. I am wondering if they have got confused and they are actually talking about the World Knight as the time frame would be about right.
Harland and Wolff - Shipbuilding and Engineering Works
Some great information about ships that H&W built, a curious thing as wellis ref: to yard build/hul lnumbers
If an build /hull number had been disignated for a ship and the order was later cancelledit wouldappear that the Nowasnot used on another build they just moved onto the next number.

Looks like that H & W info site got the details mixed up.
WORLD CAVALIER was built at Harland & Wolff in 74 and scrapped Ulsan,S.Korea in 7/82.
WORLD KNIGHT was built in Sasebo,Japan in 1975. She was 'bombed' in the Gulf 10/84 with the loss of 9 lives, and scrapped in Kaohsiung,Taiwan 1/85.
.
Hi Guillver, no the H&W info is correct it was me was wondering if they had it wrong. I knew about the World Knight and were she was built etc. It was the tragic time she had during her short timein service I was curious about, as in what happened on her for a discription like that , did she have a major incident at some time tank explosion , collision ???

Re: World Cavalier
Cappy don't mention bikes on deck, I wason a tanker valled the Volans and she was a big bugger over a 1000'long. The bike on deck was the old fashioned shopboys deliver bike. I was going down the deck at a fair old lick and the pedal caught on a coil of mooring rope? anyway pitched me off over the top by the time I stopped bouncing I was nearly over the wall, ejjit.

Re: World Cavalier
In the Iraq/Iran war we used to run up to Al Jubail to load Caustic for OZ. We would go through the Straits of Hormuz with a Royal Naval escort in convoy as far as Dubai, where we left on our own. Only sailed at night due to possibility of mines and always hugged the coast. Off Dubai there was an Iranian warship that used to challenge every ship entering the Gulf, wanting to know your destination, the stock answer was Dubai for orders. The Iranians had put an embargo on any tanker exporting Iraqi oil.
We would assemble the convoy outside the Straits and one Christmas we were due up to Al Jubail to load. The convoy consisted of two Esso VLCC's, ourselves, an ex. C.P. product tanker now owned and manned by an Indian outfit and a World Wide Tanker and tagged on the end though not officially part of the convoy, a Saudi flagged OBO.
The World Wide tanker was the last to arrive and off we went. Over the open VHF the two Esso guys were nattering to each over telling the rest of us that as they knew each other personally and one of them was the largest VLCC sailing (they proudly told us) they would be using Christian names to communicate with each other regarding station keeping speeds in the convoy. The wold wide captain said that was fine, they could call him Mike (he was a Brit). No, came back the reply from Esso, "You are number 3". We and the rest of us just kept stum and had a good giggle at the Esso chaps stupidity/arrogance. Off we went with the Esso chaps constantly on the VHF to each other letting each one know what R.P.M. they had their turbines running at. "Up 20 doug", "O.K. Ian" etc. etc.
They were having so much chatter that eventually the Navy broke in saying "Don't know about you blokes but we are on war footing here, shut up". Silence followed as Doug and Ian resorted to the satellite phone to communicate. Once clear of the Straits and before reaching Dubai, the two Esso tankers broke away from the convoy to follow the Esso designated route. When the Navy queried there actions the replied that they were following Company procedures, the Navy told them there were fast gun boats known to operate in the area they were heading for and that they could not protect them if they carried on. Suddenly Company procedures were thrown out of the window and they came back into convoy.
We got up to Al Jubail with no problem even after being challenged by the Iranian warship, loaded and came out bound for Aus. on New Years day, so that was most likely my worst Christmas at sea but also my best as we were on double bubble from the time we entered the Straits till clearing the outward bound.
Don't know where the World Wide tanker was going but the Indian tanker did blurt out to the Iranian Navy that he was a regular runner carrying fuel to and from Bahrein, not the best thing to tell an Iranian naval vessel.
