Good evening Brenda, one of the Dublin Port tugs is called the Shackleton after the great man, launched about four years ago, the sponsor was I think a grand niece of Ernest. Also there is a small museum in Dun Laoghaire harbour about Shackleton you might get some information from there.
    Regards Ciarán

No Jim, they're not. Pete's family originate from Heptonstall and Keighley. That'll be Yorkshire and as my Birth Certificate says, ' Liverpool, Lancashire' I try not to think about the other side of the Pennines too much....
    regards
    Brenda

    Hi Brenda,
Did you get to Grytviken , South Georgia where Shackleton is buried, when you did your Antarctic cruise in 2009?
They had the Funeral Service in the little wooden church there before he was buried in the little cemetery.
I have photos some where of it. There is also a replica of the boat, James Caird there as part of the museum.
It is a very interesting place to visit.

Sir Ernest was an officer with Union-Castle line prior to his polar exploits.
My own web site about U-C has a page on him and his U-C service
    Sir Ernest Shackleton
