Out of interest Bill as the MN is not mentioned anywhere in their blurb, what information did you provide them in order to get your card? Also have you just applied for it or have you actually received it?

have read this through , you need to be eligible for a Veterans Badge , which I believe it means you have had to serve on a ship in a war zone , Unlike a marine I knew who spent 22 years as an officers steward in Eastney Barracks , looks like us unarmed services are the losers again , Still I never got shot at , so I have some things to be thankful for

Tony, I applied and received my card within a week. Go into the card application section and the Merchant Navy Veterans are in the drop down menu. I copied my Discharge book pages 1&2 and posted then to the address given, as I had difficulty sending it electronically.

I'm sure I read somewhere of someone qualifying as a MN Veteran because they were on a boat carrying military supplies to Cyprus while the UN were seperating the sides. I know when I was on the African Prince we carried supplies to the garrisons in Malta and Cyprus, not sure if we carried military stuff on the Cavallo, brain freeze. Anyway, several companies boats on that run up until the Turkish invasion would qualify. I assume after Famagusta was closed it came in through Limasoll. Never seemed like a dangerous place to me, I remember one time the Greek guard on the gate had me hold his sub machine gun while he frisked me for budgies.

Default I presume by doing the copying

    Hi Bill
I presume by doing the copying of the 2 pages out of your Book, that shows that you served on a Ship in a War Zone at the time !
My late Uncle Dusty also wanted to apply for that Veterans Medal,as he was in the Suez at the time neded, but sadly passed on before he got to do it!
His Wife applied afterwards ,i think by memory she did get it?? Not sure though!
Good on you anyway, any saving these days is crucial to us oldies!
    Cheers

    This may assist others ??

As far as I am aware there is no stipulation that you had to have served in a war zone to qualify for this card, as there is for the MN veteran lapel badge, just evidence you are a Merchant Navy veteran. The term veteran applies to anyone who has served previously in that occupation.
