    SHIP OF THE MONTH (continued)

3 Comments by Doc Vernon Published on 1st April 2018 09:59 PM

A final memory is a New York-Southampton crossing in October 2009 on the renamed Saga Ruby. We were intended to have a Saturday afternoon departure, but earlier, upon arrival, the ship had rammed Pier 88 and so had a partially gashed bow. After inspections, the US Coast Guard refused to allow her to sail. Plans changed. And so we had an unexpected port of call: 2 nights at Cape Liberty, the Bayonne, New Jersey cruise terminal, and where crews from a nearby shipyard worked day and night to make the proper repairs. Finally finished and then meeting Coast Guard approval, we quietly sailed off on Monday morning. This and a subsequent whopping North Atlantic storm made us three days late into Southampton and inconveniently arriving well after
