    Default Sharp knives

There I was trimming my nails when I took a good look at my hands.
I do not have one finger or thumb that has not got a scar on it, all from using knives and slicers in galleys and kitchens all over.

Using knives can be a hazard that at times one never expects.
One finger cut to the bone when a carving knife slipped of the bench and caught the finger on the way down.

But what of you guys who were on deck, I am sure some of you must have suffered some bad damage at times, hands caught in blocks, rope burns and others.

How did you cope with them and how were they treated.
Stitched fingers can be a bloody nuisance, get in the way all the time.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

That’s probably where the one finger up you sign came from John. Probably some seaman who had only one finger otherwise would have given you two. And it copped on. Are you sure the scars on your fingers aren’t due to the removal of the tattoos Love and hate you had to have removed before you got that posh job at the University?

I met a few old steam collier engineers who with open sided steam engines put an arm in to feel bearing temperatures with their fingertips most had fingers missing

Correct training is or should be paramount, no one needs cowboys in a professional kitchen.

The old: get your **** off the gas stove granny - your to old to ride the range, comes to mind,
Knife drill is a first and a must before allowing anyone to near any kitchen.

I watch a lot of the cookery programmes on TV . There are a lot of knife accidents in the professional catering community , I have seen a lot of welders with arc-eye , machinists with lost digits , and no matter how well trained you are one distraction one moment with your eye off the ball it is the chop for the finger ends

No such luck mate, posh job with students, no way.
But most of my cuts were due to simple accidents which are common in galleys.
We had a butcher on the Pretoria who had been cutting meat in the cool room down below.
Came up after few hours washed his hands. Could not understand why there was so much blood, then realized he had cut the tip off his finger.
So cold at the time he never felt it.

When I was on deck, I was always told, when cutting with a deck knife, Always cut towards your mate. then you will not cut yourself. I never did cut myself.

Never managed to cut myself with a knife but have a few spots where my skin has been burnt by caustic soda solution, caused by my own fault when not paying sufficient attention when drawing samples. Also have two skin discoloration on my face caused by a combination of swear and a reaction too crude palm oil, even had to have a cyst surgically removed from my shin due to the same combination causing an infection to hair follicles. ( Subcutaneous cyst)
