Re: I'm Going to Jump Ship,!!
We often had a number of Spanish crew jump ship in Jcksonville, despite the immigration officers stated view that he could spot "jumpers" and so refuse them landing permits. One trip 50% of those that he granted landing permits too, jumped and were back in Spain before we reached Panama. This was on the forest product ships in C.P. where we would load Phosphate in bulk in Jacksonville for discharge in New Westminster before starting to load timber and timber products for return voyage to the U.K Why anyone . and Europe.
On one tanker I was on the 3rd Engineer jumped in all places, Kharg Island. He was sitting on a bollard as we were preparing to sail and despite pleas from us all, refused to come back on board and was eventually arrested by the Iranian marines who manned the jetty. I heard later he was marched on board the next British registered tanker to dock there and sent home DBS. Why anyone would want to jump ship onto an island in the middle of the Persian Gulf is beyond anyone's thinking.
Amongst the Scandinavians it was the tradition to leave your shoes by the ships rail where you jumped over the side. This was to show that you intended to commit suicide and the ship was not to turn around to search for you. This happened to a pal of mine on a deep sea chemical tanker where the Scandinavian captain committed suicide by jumping overboard in the middle watch, this after he had been imbibing of the alcohol held in the magnetic compass bowl. Instead of leaving a suicide note he left his shoes on the deck by the ships side rails. I guess he must have been in a very bad way to do such a thing as by committing suicide any life insurance that the company had for him would be null and void in the event of suicide.

Den, you did it all wrong, to ring the bell all you had to do was throw one of the tab nabs at it, would have rung very well. LOL

John,
Think I recall ringing 3 sets of 4. Or was that 4 sets of 3.
At that stage of the game, it didn't really mater.
No one could hear it anyway!
