When I was on the old Franconia in 1956 Carpet men came on board in Liverpool and rolled up the carpet in the Lounge, and took it ashore for cleaning, it was never returned a week later. and I was also told at the time a grand piano was taken ashore for tuning, onto a lorry and disappeared. There was no security in those days, anyone could walk aboard any ship , no checks.
In New York many people would come down to the Franconia on a weekend and walk up the gangway and look around.
When I was QM I used to organise them and get a few together and show them around and get a fist full of dollars for it.
Today no one can get on a ship, Computers on the shell doors at the top of the gangway, and check your card with photo and ID on, going ashore and arriving back on board. I have tried to get my friends in Tahiti a pass to come on board in Pape`, even tho` he works for the Government, No Chance.

Thanks John, I've often wondered how on earth they would have taken up a whole carpet that would have covered the entrance of the Queen Mary. Welded to the deck. Some of those machines were really large so you wouldn't want them breaking loose so that makes sense.

I reckon during the lay up anything could've been taken ashore there was so much going on that I can't see anyone on board asking questions of a number of men carrying something down the gangway it would just be accepted that these guys were going about their lawful business.

There was one guy on UCL who had a boarding house in Southampton, all the linen, silver and china came off the ships. Working by he would load a laundry bag and walk through the gate with it saying he was taking it to the laundry service. So much easier in those days.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

It looks like the rail strike is on,even if it isn't some companies have already decided that "it is on" and will not be running trains on that day.Trains may run in the day but the last train will be 6pm,due to the volume of people I can see many becoming stranded if they leave it till the last minute to go home.

i suppose the persons who call the strike will think they are hitting the new government........they call themselves the working people the only people the y hurt are the working people.....but they show how powerful....they think they are .......the wages for the majority are far beyond reality......and the price of rail travel is high enough any way.....now it will go up ...the people will now need more moneyto pay there fares to work .....ever decreasing circles......the result no investment in the rail business union men out of work ...all so the leftie leaders can show power ...like the mines gone the shipyards gone the mn gone the car industry gone...... the only industry left ......the public services ....which create no income whatsoever and are a bottomless pit for the working man ....just so sad its the old IM ALL RIGHT JACK

Cappy over 50% voted and over 50% 0f those who voted voted to strike. What do you think of the likes of Virgin cancelling the trains even before it has been decided if the strike is on or off they are worse than the rank and file, that I might add is to bring the general public against the union. With respect you don't know what the strike is about and nobody will ever have the right to strike no matter the conditions they are working under in your eyes.Back to the kids up chimneys as I've said before.

I notice Richard Branson Virgin Trains is hitting the North West the Labour heartlands, people in the South East will be able to have their Bank Holiday Monday ice cream at the seaside via the train, how come they can run them in the east and not the NW.

Network Rail dispute is about staffing and safety - rmt

So it could be said cappy they are going on strike to protect the public from danger,is that allowed, sounds good to me.

By the way its not one in four,to go on strike ove 50% of the membership have to agree to strike action.
