Another member of the brotherhood of the sea goes to Fiddlers Green.
Safe passage and condolences to the family.

His number is close to mine, wonder if he was at the Vindi same time?

I sailed with Doug Makinson on the Somerset of N.Z.S.Co. Doug was a class act and,a very funny guy. I am sure a lot of you remember saving up the daily beer ration until Saturday and having a party. In our case, the party was always in Dougie,s cabin and as the trip progressed Dougie collected more and more beer signs both lit and not. On a personal note, I was still a pretty inexperienced DHU, but I was always glad to be paired with Dougie by the bosun, he taught me a lot, with great patience and,a laugh. It was only a week before he died that I saw a post by Helen, his wife, and realized it was Dougie I worked with, all those years ago. I contacted her and, told her who I was and,she told Dougie that evening in the Hospital and,he remembered who I was, sadly he died shortly after and, I never got to talk to him. Fair winds and, following seas and,gin clear waters Dougie,my old shipmate. Until we meet again.
