Three ESSO men have crossed the Bar this last week.
I have just heard that,
Captain Alan Washbourne, Captain Keith Lightbody and Warren Gundry have crossed the bar,
Captain Washbourne who I sailed with in 1977 on the VLCC, ESSO ULIDIA, was the Best Captain I ever sailed with.Excellent Seaman and Master, he was also a great Comedian, had more Jokes than any professional comic,
kept us all laughing for months.
He started at sea as an apprentice with Haines, When ESSO stopped seafaring he bought a farm in Pembrokeshire
and stocked it with sheep.
I sailed with Keith Lightbody in 1976 on the VLCC, ESSO CALEDONIA. when he was Chief Officer, .
RIP men.
cheers

Re: Three ESSO men have crossed the Bar this last week.
Just going through old messages
Sailed with captain Lightbody a few times on Esso Tyne
Warren Gundry sailed with Esso Mersey
Alan W met on esso fife numerous times at fawley during my year as VIO on jetty
He once did a project in office and manage to get a full year in hotel on grounds he could settle in seafarers on secondment to office
We all got a month then had to rent
He was on course where we people put there drinks on his room in the morning he just laughed and signed for it
His famous saying he was a full time sheep farmer part time captain
I remember Warren coming onboard when he was company nav monitor telling the captain he check the chart and we been aground the master asked if what hw tide was in Bristol Channel told him not to be stupid in future
I think he left when Esso wanted people to be clean shaven to wear ba gear it was a step to far

Re: Three ESSO men have crossed the Bar this last week.
I have also been to two Funerals of ESSO men
About 4 or 5 years ago, I went to Captain Frank Clayton`s funeral with a few other ESSO men near Oldham and also Nigel Paine`s funeral in Sussex, around ten of us stayed in a hotel there so we had a good send off for Nigel.
I had sailed with him several times on the VLCCs and another good shipmate.
Sailed with Frank a few time, on the AVON and a few others.
