In 1966 I was on the Gulf Briton when I got a telegraph from my dad saying my mum was very sick. The captain agreed to let me go if I paid £200 which I did. As we were in the Nigeria delta I got a helicopter to shore. From there a flying boat to Lagos. Stayed in a hotel for the night and then a jet to London. Then the train home. I should mention I am from Montrose in Scotland. My mum died a week later. I wrote the company and thanked them for getting me home in time to see my mother before she died. I told them I was going to stay with my father and get a job ashore. They returned the £200 and told me if I ever returned to sea they would employ me. What a great gesture.
I should also mention that I left behind a parrot and one of my mates from Newcastle told me he would look after it and bring it to my house when the ship docked in the UK. I told my father this and said to look after him when he is here. Well my sister didn't know, and one night a guy came to the door with a beard. He said "here's Stans parrot". my sister said thanks and shut the door.
My dad came home late and then tried to find him without success.
