John is correct in that it is a high number for the year. In fact the Dis. A quoted belongs to Engineer Frederick Rae b.1899 and who served from 1919 through WW2.
This shows how a discharge number can be used again in MN numbering as long as another prefix is used.

Vernon numbers such on discharge books initially show to a seaman a lot. The same as certificate numbers re Certification, as is no use to anyone now as new certification and numbers now exist, my old masters cert. was 96781. I knew a bloke out here and only through chance I saw his cert. number was 96782. What were the chances of that. ? Was issued the same time as mine. Discharge book numbers are similar but have a bit more leeway, take Brian’s number e.g. is round about the era of mine, but he was at sea about a year before me. The number quoted starting with 9 would to me at a guess with R stuck in front would be someone who started at sea in the 60 s. If a seaman would probably know this. As many have gained access to this site sailing under false colours is always best to sit back and watch. Those who aren’t seamen, or seamen there to cause mischief soon slip up. Not saying the last one was but until he proves otherwise is best just to listen. JWS.

That’s what I am saying Brian there was a bit of slack in discharge book numbers but not enough slack to cover over 10 years. My number is R 575129 but went to sea 1953 a year after you. Mine should have been slightly higher than yours ,not lower. I put these small discrepancy’s down to shipping offices maybe being dished out with so many numbers and then the law of supply and demand takes over. When your out cruising the pacific I expect to be cruising the motorways of the UK, so leave some decent weather behind will use sparingly promise. Good sailing anyway. Cheers JWS.

    These numbers are interesting.
When i got my book at the Vindi, the lady in charge had a pile of books with running numbers.
She looked at me and said i have one odd book from the last set of numbers, would you mind
    having that one.
So i got a different number to all the other lads in my group.
