    Welcome to the site Andrew.
Where you on the Good Hope Castle when she was on fire and abandoned?

I sailed with Captain Jonathan Mercer, Master of the AMSTERDAM of HAL. last year on the World Cruise., he was on the GOOD HOPE CASTLE when they abandoned ship and spent three days in a life boat and made it to Ascension Island. he was a Cadet at the time.

I sailed on the Good Hope Castle, but the previous one, that we took to Hong Kong breakers in 1959.
    Cheers
    Brian

Just come across this, better late than never.... No I was on the Good Hope Castle when she was converted from a pure Cargo ship to a 12 Passenger ship. I was firstly Asst Purser and then made up to Purser/Chief Stewd. Des L'Estrange was the Master and Bob Gemmell was the Chief Engineer. Did not do long on her as was posted back to the Passenger ships, but had a great time. Wilber Smith sailed from CT to St Helena to do some big Game fishing.

I only ask as my late Brother was on those two as well , but many Crew so the possibility of knowing each other very dim and not knowing the dates you were on. He was around the 1957 / 59 marks ?? LOL
