New website: B.I. Resources
Some time back I said I would republish the content of a website called MerchantNavyOfficers.com whose owner, Fred Waddington had died. Much of the content was about the British India Steam Navigation Co.
I have already incorporated some of the material on my Ship Histories and Recollections websites, but a fair bit of it is not a good fit on existing websites so I decided to produce a new one under the Benjidog Historical Research Resources group of websites and have called it B.I. Resources. The site is now live and the first pages installed include copies of B.I. brochures for schools to recruit staff - which contain descriptions of the various jobs and salaries - and an article about the involvement of B.I. in moving people around in the indian sub-continent when it was partitioned in 1947.
There is a fair bit more to go but one way or another I am pleased to be able to keep the best bits of the old site going.
Regards,
Brian

Re: New website: B.I. Resources
I have just added further pages to this website that might be of interest as follows:
B.I. Postcards - a selection of Richard Crow's collection of postcards featuring B.I. ships
Kenya and Uganda - James Slater describes the service histories of the post-war British India ships Kenya and Uganda including the service of the latter as a hospital ship during the Falklands War.
Kenya - Article by Captain John W. Cole including many plans and photos

Brian

Re: New website: B.I. Resources
For many years I have been trying to locate an old school friend.
Last time we met was in Durham when we were both on leave.
At that time he was sitting for his mates ticket.
To my knowledge he only sailed with BI.
Any way that I can search through your site?

Hi Dennis,
Just before the MerchantNavyOfficers.com went off the air there was an appeal for help to save the material on it and after getting into contact with Fred Waddington's widow, I copied everything I could onto my server for future rework. As you can see I have been getting stuck into that recently and all the material I have done so far can be found via the index page HERE. I will be adding more over the coming weeks and months as I get time so please check back and see what has been added. I will also put a note on this site as stuff is added but don't want people to think I am just advertising my own website - I am publishing the material so it doesn't get lost. I am afraid that I don't have access to information about the members of the defunct website so the only names will be those mentioned in the published articles.
Incidentally I have just added another page about Fazilka - a ship whose propellor shaft broke in two places in 1900 but amazingly her engineering staff managed to repair enabling her to make her way to Colombo for repair.
Regards,
Brian
