Default Bill (William) Turner - engineer 50s - late 70s

    Hiya,

I have posted on the Ellerman forum. But at the start of Dad's career at sea he did a number of very long trips on Bank Line ships before he married Mum.

    Laganbank Nov '56 - May '57 as 4th engineer

    Eastbank June '57 - Nov '57 as 4th

    Northbank Dec '57 - August '59 as 4th

Streambank Jan '62 - Oct '62, discharged at Calcutta as 3rd engineer

Would also love to know where these ships went. I assume they were tramp ships from what others have told me on this site?

    Hello Pam
Your best bet is to obtain the Voyage Record Cards for those Ships
as they will tell you where they went etc.
Obtainable from the Guildhall Library London.
You will have to I think now go in person but not too sure ,as things have changed there!
    Good Luck

    Try this. Pam.
here is a list of BANK LINE ships and destinations. this is in 1966. i9t was the same in the 50s
you may have to expand it to read clearer.

    Cheers

    Thanks Doc,

Looked at their website a few weeks ago on the advice of another member of this forum - however I got the impression that you do have to go in person!! But thank you anyway.
    Pam

Pam all our 'volunteers' are there to guide you to the best of their knowledge and the latest information they have to hand at the time, mostly it is pointing you in the right direction but the final piece in the jigsaw is always in your hands

Hello Ivan. I am, as I think my posts indicate, enormously appreciative of all the help and information I have received thus far. I have, as stated, looked at the Guildhall website a number of times, and from what I can gather, accessing the VRCs entails a trip to London. Just wanted confirmation that this is indeed the case. Have really enjoyed the research I have done so far, and would love to go to the library itself. Just that, from others on this forum who live in Oz, their posts intimated that there might be an online service for this, and as I live in Merseyside (ironically moved back here from London three years ago!), an online service would be more immediate!! From what I can glean from the Guildhall website, you can order the records in advance of a physical visit as the VRCs are not held on site, which suggests to me that there isn't an online service that will send out the information. Think we may have our wires crossed on this.

Yes Pam I was not too sure after all this time,as when I applied I got mine through the post, but that was before,
Now as you say I do think one has to go in person, which is really somewhat of a bind for many! Possibly in the future they may open the Online way again!??
    Cheers and good luck

Hi, I sailed with the Bank Line on the "Teakbank" from '64 till '68 and signed off as 4th engineer, if my memory serves me correct (!) the Streambank was on a similar run to the Teak, normal run was from Calcutta to Chulna to Durban then Cape town, across to Punta Arenas up South American coast to gulf ports. Loaded general cargo either for Australia or New Zealand, usually we did one trip to Australia and second trip to NZ. My first trip was 20 months before we got back to Calcutta...second trip was 19 months I then migrated to Oz. We were asked to sign '3 year articles with Bank Line' during those years. "Bill--William Turner" strikes a cord with me as his name seems awfully familiar, where did he come from originally?? The Teak was sold to a Greek company and renamed "Newman" and not sure of date but was sent to the breakers yard named Sathya Sai Baba breaking yard near Karachi ( I think) and feel that the "Stream" was sent there as well but not sure. If I can find the correct dates which are somewhere on the HDD will repost....hope this helps...of the 22 years I spent at sea my fondest and happiest memories are with Mr. Andrew Weir's Bank Line...hope this helps in some small way. The ships you mention had a number of Anglo-Indians like myself who served on them as they 'seemed' to have Calcutta as their home port. Once again my memory is hazy but there was Gordon D'Senna (Engineer)who sailed on the Streambank??
