    Default Cardiff Sea School

    Good day to you all
My mother has told me that my father Gerald (Gerry) Tantum used to attend at a school in Cardiff South Wales from where he would be allocated the ship he would be sailing on
Has anyone got any information or heard of this place
    Best regards
    Brian

Default HMS Conway?? or Clio ??

    Hello Brian T
I think that the Training Ship HMS CONWAY 1859 - 1974 was the one in question.
Now i may be incorrect so hope if i am someone will correct this!
The HMS Conway was first started as a Seamans Traing Ship on the River Mersey, but during the War Years 1941 was moved to safer grounds at Menai Straigts in Wales, however this was in North Wales,so as said i am not sure!
There was another Training Ship called Clio but as of now i dont have too much info on that, all i know was that it was a sort of reform Ship at the time!
Hope there is more to come from others here!
    Cheers

    Default Cardiff Sea School

    Hello Brian

I was at Cardiff Sea Training School in 1949/50. It was located in what was then known as Spillers Old Mill, a disused warehouse on Cardiff Docks. I started there straight from school.
In charge was a tough old Australian bosun who trained us hard, but was a fair man who made sure that we were adept in the basics of seamanship prior to letting us loose!
From there we were allotted our ships by Bill Henke at the Cardiff Shipping Pool.
Let me know when your dad was there.

    Regards,

    Taffy R556959

    Brian

I have just read your earlier post and Castleman's reply to you.
Looking at your dad's Discharge Book number he was at sea much earlier than I was. I do not know when the Sea School operated from and therefore whether it existed during the War. Perhaps it was one of the others mentioned earlier.

    Cheers,

    Taffy R556959

    Default Cardiff sea school

I thought HMS Conway was a training school for Deck Officers. I dont recall young seaman training there.
When I was in Blue Funnel half the Deck Officers were ex Conway and were part of the Welsh Navy.

    I might be wrong??

    regards
    jimmy

    Default Cardiff nsts

    HI Brian
I was in the Cardiff sea training school in early 1965, if this is the same one as your dad attended. It was at the top end of the old West dock and was accessed from Collingdon road as you came over the canal bridge.
There were two buildings in the compound ours and Reardon Smiths. If this is the one your dad attended let me know and i can give you some more details about the place.

    Taffy.
Was your instructor called MR COWARD ? if so he was still at the school in 65, he lived in Penarth.
    Geoff.

    Default Sea School

    Hi taffy
    Obviously a welshman like man
My dad Gerry (Gerald Tantum) ran away to sea when he was fourteen and lied about his age
To the best of my knowledge he started off as a cabin boy, he started at the schoolin 1942 but i dont think he acully studied there he simply went there to join his ship, but i'm not sure
Many thanks for your reply it is much appreciated
Hoping to speak to you again soon
    Best regards
    Brian
