    Post Help Needed Please

I am trying to locate the graveyard in Bilbao, Spain where my grandfather, who was a Merchant Navy Seaman is buried. He died in Feb 1950 following an accident while boarding his ship, the Rodney Baxter and is buried in Bilbao. I've located a Commonwealth Graveyard there but his details are not listed on their online records. I wonder would anyone know of any other graveyards in Bilbao where Merchant Navy Seamen may be buried.

His name was William O'Neill, from Kinsale, Co. Cork in Ireland. He was born in 1894 and died, I believe on 11/02/50. As far as I've been able to find out, his Discharge Number was R17628

I'd really appreciate any help or advice.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Louise,

Initially, a quick hello from myself. I will take a quick look myself tonight
but, it will be in the morning that I will have a bit more time.

Doc, our Senior Moderator is already on the case, fingers crossed for some
    good results ASAP.

I notice you have your location as Cork, it would help me to know if that is
Cork City, County or Kinsale itself.

I have relatives myself in Kinsale and visit often hence, attempting to know
if you may know some of the people that I would contact that way.

As said I will look further but, think some of the information may be found
otherwise via Kinsale. There are many still about that may know more of him.

I would be very surprised at any Commonwealth Graveyard listing or grave with
the date and circumstances of his death.

Will look forward to both working with you and hopefully, all response from yourself
and others that assist from our on site team.

    Regards,

    Keith.

Louise, last year an Albert O’Neill of Cork, sought similar information,
I would take a guess that you are related? Just wondering if that is the
case, would you know or could you find out if he discovered any more?

"Hi, My grandfather William O'Neill from Kinsale Cork Ireland died as a result of an accident going aboard a ship in Bilbao Spain in Feb 1951. The ship was called the Rodney Baxter. I'm trying to locate his grave in Bilbao as the family didn't have the money to bring his remains home to Ireland and he is buried there somewhere".

We will endeavour to assist in everyway and your response / reply etc is important.

Hopefully, we will discover more as we go along.

For tonight, I add the detail below, which is possibly your relative.

First guess would seem logical, though possibly not correct would be Bilbao British Cemetery?

Bilbao British Cemetery is located in Sondika, in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, northern Spain. The British cemetery was originally located on the coast of Biscay from about 1775, before being disaffected and relocated to its current position in 1929.

The cemetery can be found on the main road out of Sondika towards Derio. The cemetery is set back from the road and is now hidden by new housing. A Remembrance Day service is held every year.

The cemetery contains a Commonwealth War Graves plot (maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission) with 58 casualties, many reburials from other cemeteries in the region where permanent maintenance could not be assured. These casualties include servicemen from Poland, as well as persons from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations. Service personnel from both the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force are buried here. Most of the dead are from World War II, there are also four graves and three special memorials (to those whose graves elsewhere were lost) of British service personnel of World War I.

There is also a British merchant seaman of World War I who was reburied among the civilian graves in Plot G.

I add a link to a search facility, this will be my next step.

Nothing as yet in the Irish Archives for birth at Kinsale, now
    on a Cork County search.

The link if it works is for info:

    1901

National Archives: Census of Ireland 1911

    1911

National Archives: Census of Ireland 1911

Think we need a reply / update etc from Louise, esp as to the source of her information, any documents held etc.

No joy as yet with an Irish Mariners search.

I have only had a quick look and intend to go back ASAP.

Adding links as it could be useful resource if searching yourself or for others interested.

Home Irish Mariners: Home Irish Mariners

    Search the database Irish Mariners

Is it possible that William was a middle name and by birth had a different Christian name ?
