Hi Keith. Thank you so much for this detailed response. I am from Kinsale, Co. Cork and the request you received last year from Albert O'Neill was indeed in relation to the same query. (Albert is my brother) I didn't realise that he'd also been in touch with you. We haven't been able to find out anymore on this. I've even tried the Spanish Embassy in Dublin and the Irish Consulate in Bilbao to no avail. As far as we know, he is definitely buried in, or possibly near, Bilbao in Spain. In the past, my Dad has been told by men who knew my grandfather that they stood at his graveside but unfortunatlely these men have now passed away. My Dad was a child when my grandfather died (he's now 82) so any paperwork etc that may have existed has long since been destroyed. It's possible that the ship may have docked in/close to Bilbao and that he's buried in a graveyard in or around Bilbao. Any information at all that anyone can share in relation to any possible graveyards in or around Bilbao would be great. Thanks so much for the time you've taken to respond to me, I do appreciate it. Kind regards, Louise L.

    Hi Louise,

I will keep searching and though some are busy, a few of the team here hopefully, will help.

Your family tale is not dissimilar to that of my Grandfather, again a man of Kinsale - similar
circumstance with his loss, though just before WW2. His death was in France and seems records
and possibly the grave were destroyed by bombing and WW2 troops etc.

However, after all this time I know more of him now and even have a photo of his grave from then.

    Hi Keith,.jpg

Fingers crossed for a similar result yourself.

In the main thanks for your reply, please keep looking in - reply, confirm update etc and we will
    work with you.

I will have a think of the best way forward and will myself add more soon.

Possibly, we may meet up next time I visit Kinsale.

    Regards,

    Keith.

    Thanks Doc.

I do love a challenge and have my fingers crossed.

One thought is that the ship / company may not have paid for the burial etc and
William could be in a paupers grave, which could mean Spanish church records etc.

I would hope that more related with Kinsale and Cork may hold a key.

Been a bit of a long day, need to have a thinking head for this. Prob start afresh in
    the morning.

Much of mine took some time but, a lot came from distant rellies esp in Kinsale,
fingers crossed that we get a break at some stage.

I would like to know where the original info: His name was William O'Neill, from Kinsale, Co. Cork in Ireland. He was born in 1894 and died, I believe on 11/02/50. As far as I've been able to find out, his Discharge Number was R17628 was sourced and if any one in the family has looked anything up in the Archives etc.

    Anyway, tomorrow is another day.

    Regards,

    Keith.

I have been looking today but,
    nothing new as yet.

Ironically, did discover a bit more
    on my own quest enroute.

I have collected from home today a few books,
inc - County Cork / Kinsale Roots.

    Still working on all.

    Fingers crossed.

    Keith.

PS. Where did you find all original info? esp - Discharge Number was R17628

    Hello Louise.

Today only found the same info as mentioned before.

Wondered whom you may have contacted in Kinsale regarding this.

Thoughts are possibly the loss is recorded somewhere, was a service
held at a local church? death notice in local papers? would the History
    Association be of help?

Leo Mcmahon was the senior reporter for the Southern Star, he has now
retired, he has assisted me a lot over the years. I would imagine that the
local newspapers carried some kind of report at the time.

Tomas O'Brien former Kinsale Mayor may be best to advise of who to contact
locally on this local, much has changed since my last visit, Kinsale UDC and
    even the Harbour Board.

People you may know that could pos help - Dermot Ryan, Nora M Hickey if still
involved with Kinsale history - Not knowing who you know am just suggesting
    for now.

Depending on religion, I know that Cannon David Williams has retired but
someone at St. Multose ? St. John the Baptist Church, Friars St helped me
    a lot with records.

LINK Kinsale History Society – Website of the Kinsale Historical Society

It as said would be helpful to know who you may have contacted.

I can inquire directly with many if you allow me to share the details.

The other route would be to find the ships log but, this may only confirm
the cause of death and where but, possibly may not record the funeral / burial.

    Will continue searching for now.

    Regards,

    Keith.

Hi Keith, thanks so much for all the work you've put into this for us. The info I quoted in my original message such as Discharge Number was taken from online records that I'm assuming are his. My Dad is not sure if my grandfather was born in Kinsale or not - he may have been born in Lisnaskeagh in Co. Fermanagh as the family moved from there. My Dad vaguely remembers corresponding with the shipping company on his mother's behalf at the time of his Dad's death but that was approx. 70 years ago but he does think that they made some kind of payment to her which would lead me to believe there should be some records with the shipping company but I don't know what company that is.

I know Tomas O'Brien quite well and others in the historical society here so will touch base with them. One of my grand-uncles, who was born in Kinsale, always maintained that there was no record of his birth in St. Multose (the family were Protestant but a few, including my grandfather, became Roman Catholic in order to get married) so not sure if any point in pursuing any records there.

    Thanks again,
    Louise.
