    Talking Tracing MN seamen

    Hello everyone

I have two relatives from 1800's that were listed as " Mariner" and "Seaman M S " , what details are needed to try and trace their connection. Both have the surname "Smith" yes that name again! One was a widower that married the others younger sister. I am trying to find out if they were both employed by same company or on the same ship. If a MN seaman was not married did his income go back to his parents, or mother if she was a widow? If they were married I presume it would go to wife??

    All help gratefully accepted!

    Cheers

    Hi
    Kathryn,

Any info that you have in any way would help us.

You at the moment know more than us.

Full names, date of birth, place of birth etc would be a good start.

Anything else inc official numbers and more, even spouse and siblings etc
    can assist greatly.

    Regards Keith.

    Hi Keith & Doc Vernon

Please see attached 14 page PDF (hopefully,( sorry have to upload separately as too big fileGranddad John Smith's family male line 1865 birth Cert.pdfGranddad John Smith's family male line 1890 birth Cert.pdfGranddad John Smith's family male line 1890 marriage Cert.pdfGranddad John Smith's family male line 1918 marriage Cert.pdfGranddad John Smith's family male line 1860 marriage Cert.pdf ). It starts with my Grandfather John Smith's marriage cert, his birth cert, his parents marriage cert, John James Edward's birth cert and his parents marriage cert. It is the Joseph Smith - Mariner that married Elizabeth Eliza Smith 1860 that I am trying to find out what type of seaman was he? He was a widower when he married Elizabeth Eliza and he died sometime between 1871 and 1881. I have his possible parish transcript for birth in Hull , Yorkshire and his fathers parish birth transcript. Seems the Eastenders are becoming Coronation Street!!. The 1851 census form has Elizabeth Eliza with widow mother and older brother Nathaniel whom also is a mariner. Trying to establish the connection between Joseph Smith widower and Nathaniel Smith Mariner. When Joseph Smith started to have a family with Elizabeth Eliza he seems to have come ashore and is listed as a Dock labourer. Before he married Elizabeth Eliza he must have been married to someone else?? I have 3 British Navy printouts which may or may not be relevant also included. Just when I thought looking for one side of a marriage with Smith name was bad enough , now I have a double-banger one!

Any help with the connection between Joseph and Nathaniel , if they were on same ship or worked for same company who knows but all info gladly received. ( will have to attach info on two posts)

    Cheers

    Hi Everyone

I have found some more documents on FMP ( Didn't realise they had a MN/maritime section!) Here are some for Joseph Smith , will put some for Nathaniel on next post. ( Can only do the Transcript as the image is too big to download to this site)

    Cheers

Have been trying to find Nathaniel in 1861 census and only two possibilties , got married and lived in Cornwall or got married in Shoreditch but died before 1861 census as see attached transcript. It is only a possibility as did a death search with his birth date 1828 and death between 1851 and 1861 with the word Mariner and this is the only one that came up. Not sure were to go from this transcript?? Any help in pointing me in the right direction to confirm this death index most appreciated!
