U.K. law to ban ‘upskirting’ photos blocked by Conservative lawmaker

U.K. law to ban ‘upskirting’ photos blocked by Conservative lawmaker WORLD
LONDON—A law that would make it a criminal offence in the U.K. to take “upskirting” photos was blocked Friday in Parliament despite receiving backing from the British government.

The initiative was stopped by a single Conservative Party legislator who objected when the bill was put forward in the House of Commons.

The U.K. government had endorsed the legislation earlier Friday to ban “upskirting” photos, but the process was stalled by one Conservative lawmaker.

Some lawmakers who supported the measure shouted “shame” after Christopher Chope single-handedly thwarted the proposal simply by shouting “Object!”

Parliamentary rules make it hard for bills introduced by backbench lawmakers, rather than the government, to make progress. They can be halted by an objection from one lawmaker.

Upskirting involves taking a photo or video under someone’s clothing without their consent. It has become more common in recent years with the adoption of smartphones.

The government had endorsed the legislation earlier Friday.

British Justice Minister Lucy Frazer called the practice “a hideous invasion of privacy which leaves victims feeling degraded and distressed.” She said making upskirting a specific offence would send a clear message that perpetrators will be punished.

The law would allow for prison sentences of up to two years in the most egregious cases. It is expected to be resubmitted in July.

Christopher Chope was born in Putney, the son of Pamela (née Durell) and Robert Charles Chope (1913-1988), a circuit judge and former judge of county courts. He was educated at the St Andrew's Preparatory School in Eastbourne and Marlborough College, before attending Queen's College at the University of St Andrews where he was awarded an LLB degree in 1970. He was a contemporary of Michael Fallon and Michael Forsyth, and was influenced by Madsen Pirie. He finished his education at the Inns of Court School of Law. Chope was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1972.

Chope was elected as a councillor on the Wandsworth London Borough Council in 1974 and became the council leader in 1979; he left the council on his first election to Parliament in 1983. Chope was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1982 New Year Honours for services to local government. This really is beyond me.

He blocked the Bill and now he wholeheartedly supports it,how can he do that, if you firmly believe in something today how can you just change your mind tomorrow. Mind you he is a politician.!!!

Well if he was mates with Michael Fallon that may explain things, did Fallon not resign from the Cabinet over alleged sexual misconduct. There are an awful lot in power who are perverts.

The Minister was a prat for objecting.
#5 Sir Michael Fallon resigned because a journalist commented on his touching of journalist Julia Hartley-Brewers knee. She commented at the time and was forgotten about as he had apologised, Hardly pervert Lewis.
How many female knees have you touched?

The point that I was trying to make, that touching a female knee is hardly the work of a pervert, is it?
There are MPs that are real peverts in the true sense of the word, but you chose to ignore them.

Not back biting Jim, accusing someone of being a pervert on flimsy evidence when there are others more worth of the description in my book is wrong.
